Default stripped stud

just come to build my head back up on my cossie,

2 of the exhaust side studs on the camshft caps are stripped - they were loose when i stripped it for skimming, but didnt htink anything of it.

they have already been helicoiled(devils work)

what should ido to get them to stay in the head.... superglue ??

seriosuly - any ideas welcomed - the head isnt coming off again though - any work will have to be doen with it in situ.

TBH Dave the only and best way to over come this problem whilst its in situ is use helicoils if fitted correctly you can tighten down a steam train other option new head

you could possibilly get a good engineering works to drill out the hole to the next bolt size that will fit and tap a new thread in the clean hole. then a bolt could be turned down to suit the diameter of the original stud while retaining the thread for the new hole.and then its just a mater of cutting a new thread on the plane section of the machined bolt to take the nut for the bearing cap
i know it sounds like a lot of heavy work but its very simple to a good engineering works and a lot cheaper than buying a head. plus the bearing caps have a very light tightening torque so there is a very small load on an individual cap

new solid insert available(Wurth etc),which still requires drill and tap that can be done on the car(watch the swarf and grease the tap to trap it)-stronger again! than helicoil

as said would be really easy to do. i do this sort of stuff day in and day out. would take a god firm about an hour at the tops pos hour and a half. would be a lot stronger than helicoils. fucking waste of time imo! it dont even take much longer. just make sure you get the bolt made out of proper material. would be easy to turn down hex section bar to fit.

Yep, use the solid inserts, no need to use different stud as the hole will have to be drilled larger for the insert to bring it back to normal size (m8) I believe. I should know I did 3 on mine!!!! I got the inserts from work though, so I don't know where you would get them.

is it generally the exhaust side that goes with the heat? none of the exhaust cam studs are very clever - migh do them all.

ive just had the same thing with mine..i tapped the holes in the head out to 10 mil,then got me old man to turn down some 10 mil bolts,so that they were 8 mil at one end,to fit thru the cam cap.a bit of loctite on the threads...job done!!!!

ill have a good look if they are helicoils.... pretty sure they are - then that is the next route i reckon.

they were not heli coild - must be the threads - fitted proper helicoils and jobs a good un
