Default Fitting a Modern Diesel Engine into Escort Mk5 / MK6

An idea a friend and I have come up with

how difficult would it be to fit a modern reliable fast diesel engine into an older Escort

Im guessing we would need
Engine
Turbo
ECU
Wiring Loom
Dashboard Clocks?

the wiring loom would be an adventure in itself. i presume a donor car would be the best bet

what engines are available, would things line up.. any (as much as possible) gen would be amazing..

I don't want to do the silver top conversion.. most of these 2.0s are getting up there for 20 years old now! and they are not cheap (for what they are) either

Thanks in advance

Alan

for me it would have to be the mondeo st220 engine etc great engine/power/easy tune should be to hard to fit, but getting abs ect to work could be a hard job

physically fitting it in there are going to be big hurdles. if its out of a mk1.5 focus its still the old escort diesel engine fitted with common rail injection system so going to be the easier conversion compared with the mondeo units.

wiring it all up and making it all work is going to be the biggest headache and personally way too much work for what you will end up with.

i'd far rather start with an escort tdi lump. increasing the boost a little and fuel pressure will see 110bhp pretty easily and wit even more boost and fuel pressure (standard turbo) and front mount intercooler should be looking nearer 130bhp. perhaps then its time for bigger injectors and turbo to see nearer the 145bhp mark and far far far cheaper than fitting a modern tdci that imho is going to be far worse!

apart from the poorer reliability of modern diesels (and the huge expense when they go wrong!!!!) they dont have the pull from low down that a traditional diesel does. traditional diesels will slug on even when they're about to die but modern stuff just dies, little hint of labouring it and engine dies along with power steering and servo assist brakes!

go te escort tdi route, far far far better!!!

btw i've driven and lived with for many years both traditional and modern diesel cars and great though they are wen they work modern diesels are not that good!

And I corrected your mistake, thus helping.

The OP asking for opinions on the best DIESEL engine, and then you suggesting a V6 petrol, make's your post a hell of a lot more pointless...

Thanks for you help,

the mechanical diesel does seem the better choice, is there a tuning guide anywhere

incidently i have owned (and own) a couple of modern diesels
One being a remapped Seat Leon tdi that pushed a proven 143hp .. that was good fun.. but it blew up, rebuilt it with a bigger turbo then sold it

Other is a standard Saab 9-3 TiD 150 thats the wifes!

In the past i have owned several 306dturbos all with mechanical fuel pumps.. one i upped the boost on and it run lush! no idea what figure but it was a quick little light car..

Id imagine 145hp from a torqy derv turbo would be ace in a escort (lighter then saab and seat)... I prefer Diesels to Petrol which is why i have asked

is there a tuning guide anywhere?
will any 1.8 td engine do?
what will i need to do to see 140hp?

it would surely but it would take some cutting welding/wiring for it to fit an work right

escort tdi is same to tune as 306dturbo. theres 2 types of pump and i think 2 types of actuator.

tuning guide wise theres a couple of videos done by some bloke in his garage on a 306dturbo which can be used for the escort.

first thing i'd do is decoke the engine and run some diesel fuel system cleaner through and make sure its running right. then to get nearer the 145bhp mark its front mount intercooler, up the boost a fair amount (not sure on psi) and up the fueling a tiny bit off boost and quite a bit on boost and when done right will be a stonking quick escort tdi. was actually planning on doing this myself but bought a petrol 2l focus instead

i dont know if any td engine will do but if you cant find the answer anywhere best bet is to try the scrappies for an escort tdi and use it as a donor. if you can try getting it running at the scrappy first, should be possible with a good battery and the key!

lol no worries mate.

TBH, if I'm being honest, I wouldn't bother with a ford diesel, although it pains me to say it, I'd go VAG. A mate has a 1.9 tdi leon, remapped to 150bhp and loads of torque, for a heavy car, it shifts well!
