Default please GOD help me before i torch 12 years of hard work...

i have a 1982 capri, ex 2.8i, now 24v cosworth. stood it up for couple of months and tbh it wasn't idling great then. i've now taken it out and am completely p***ed off with it. it won't tick over, hunts like a b***rd and i'm out of ideas. new fuel, battery, checked for unmetered air, the lot.

does anyone on here know their way around these? i'm down to ICV and TPS as possibilities, then i'll have to pay some garage to gouge me.

please tell me i'm in the right place, i'm pulling my hair out here!!

Matt, thanks for the reply. One of the secondary symptoms with it is that is struggles under bottom of revs engine load, then above about 3-4k it starts to deliver power again. Is this in keeping with ICV or could it be something else?

Is there a way I can test the ICV?

yeah, unplug the icv and just give it a clean up first, it worked with mine other thing is these 24v engines are not great between 1 and 3000 revs.. they have a bit of a flat spot. later scorpio BOB cams in it and I think vectra v6 injectors will make a big difference to it between the low rev range. my car did exactly the same as yours so i'd pretty much say icv. back to the problem at low revs, if it misses when you put the engine under load, meaning foot on the floor in top gear at 40mph then that sounds like a spark plug breaking down, simple fix, new plugs.

it's back in the garage hanging its head in shame now. i'll strip the plenum and throttle off later and have a good nose round for unmetered air sources as well.

if i can't clean the old ICV up to a satisfactory level i'll get a new one. also it hasn't had plugs since i built it, a good 7 odd years ago so it might not hurt!

I would mate. don't bin the icv just give it a wiggle and a clean and plug it in and it might work mate. defo try changing plugs though.

I wouldn't bother with that. if that was faulty you would know, it probably wouldn't rev or stick at somethin silly like 2600 revs . that kind of thing. but I never realised they had a tps tbh. though they where a cable, might sound daft. never really looked.. lol

TPS is on left of throttle body as you look in from front of car, it's a black plug with a multiplug with 3 ins going in to it.

just took the ICV out, cleaned it thoroughly but still gunk coming out. think it might be better to just buy a new one tbh. also, theres a plastic pipe from underneath plenum into breather valve which sits in top of one of the rockers that had split a bit, i've replaced that too. finally, the rearmost nut holding the actual plenum on wasn't sooper tight. i'm hoping that addressing all these things together might sort it.

going to change plugs at same time, took them out and they're a bit ancient.

theyre a good engine when they're running right aren't they? nice sound and feel to them.

ordered new ICV (couldnt clean old one fully), new plugs (old ones were bloody old!) and new fuel filter. also one of the plenum bolts (the rear under the coil pack) wasn't super tight when i took it off. i'd retorqued all the others after last time it was off and then rebuilt/run for a bit but must have forgotten that one. replaced split breather that goes into valve on top of rocker cover as well.

i'll do that lot then report back if anyone's interested

Default *solved*

ok, replaced ICV wth new one, stopped it cutting out but still needed idle set high and sounded very lumpy. put in new plugs, farted about with screw on left of throttle body, generally sodded about with a few other things and it STILL sounded awful, with poor juddery delivery at bottom end and lurching.

had cup of tea, scratched head and other things, reapproached the problem with "ok, you've seen these symptoms before, what could it be?" seemed to be hunting, so in last ditch effort i took the k&n off to see if it would give me any clues. car idles smoothest it's ever been now, albeit at 2000 rpm atm.

tomorrow morning i will fit a much, much larger k&n (the one on it is probly only any good for engines up to 2 litres max) and report back again.

as a ps, i've just been looking at footage of 24v engines running in converted cars on youtube, they all hunt a little on tickover where they have normal/smaller air filters and it's occurred to me that mine has done this a bit since the day i built it. the filter i fitted is not up to the job for a large, derestricted engine.

hope this helps someone, i'll report back tomorrow when it's finished.

Totally fixed. Put a very, very large K&N on it and reset idle. It's the best it's ever run.

I've got it listed on ebay atm, but I'm beginning to think I should hang on to it now!

i've just been offred a very dubious looking speedboat for it. good old ebay!

the only way i'll let it go is if it gets silly high money. tbh it's now running the fastest it's ever been, it's brilliant.

took it off ebay earlier. can't bring myself to part with it now it's finally running right.

got a hell of a lot of interest tho, there's clearly still interest in capris.
