Default Cossie problem

My escort cos has been making a slight rumbling noise when slowing down for while now, but has got worse in the last week.

When slowing down the noise starts, if i press the clutch in it stops.

When stopped if i press the clutch in and out, with the engine running, i can hear a slight knocking noise when letting the clutch out. But it doesn't do this with the engine off.

No noise when driving in general just when backing off.

Thanx Chris

Get the front prop checked ASAP, i'm not saying it is this but they are prone to faliure and cause a mess when they do

Does yours vibrate slightly through the floorpan of the car? If so my saph 4x4 does this as well. I've put mine down to the gearbox. As what it is exactly causing this i'm not sure. I have heard of a similar problem before. This other esc cos went back to a well known garage 3 or 4 times. Each time he got the car back it seemed worse. I think in the end he had a new gearbox fitted, but it was under warranty. Sorry i can't help you with this but will be interested to know what it is causing this rumble myself. Hope you get it sorted.

Cheers

Graham.

I did find mine had almost seized up. I managed to free the joint with plenty of lube etc. Then pumped some grease back into the joint. Still have rumbling noise.

Cheers

HI CHRIS,

Sounds like engine problem as you say when car stopped, and engine running
by dipping the clutch in and out you have slight knock, and rumble when slowing down, bottom end bearings?, if low oil pressure, what is your oil
pressure engine hot with the engine at tick over, but as 4/4 maybe something in gearbox, imput shaft bearing, normally noisier with clutch pedal released,
can you hear what area it is coming from, and is your gearbox oils for box and
transfer box oil at correct level, or is it 2, problems,

Dave,

Sure its not as simple as the release bearing. This was on the way out on my old sierra and would make a noise similar to that mentioned above.

chris or dawn, when slowing down in gear does the car kangaroo slightly?

Thanx for replies

Ziggy my first thought was release bearing.

Would that make the knocking noise when at idle as i release clutch?

Doesn,t kangaroo though.

Is there anything else i can check to narrow it down

Chris

Mine does kangaroo a bit. What is causing this then?
Cheers

Sorry, i'd forgotten i'd replied to this post

To be honest i wouldn't know where to start. Problems like this i leave to my trusted locall mechanic. Sorry mate. The only reason I new it was the release bearing on mine was when said mechanic jumped in and test drove the car. He was confident it was the release bearing due to the types of noise it was making and the situations at which the noise would eminate.

Mine made a warbling sound when the clutch was engaged without a gear being slected (basically showing early signs of wear). It not a real noticable sound, you'll only hear it when you know what to listen for. I picked it up in my garage as it was amplified with the echo's.

The mechanic said that when they wear to a serious point they become really noisy and start to squeal and knock. Thats why I'm thinking it may be your release bearing. Only thing I can recommend is to get it checked by a professional.

Graham.H, kangarooing can be caused by a worn clutch/release bearing. Don't know the exact reason why, something to do with the spring plate not cushioning transmission vibrations or something. A faulty map sensor can also cause kangarooing as the car may experiance a slight miss-fire on overrun. This also happened to my previous sierra. Got it diagnosed on a rolling road.

Wangdian,
Thanks Wangdian for your reply. I have been suspecting this along with another problem i've been having with a slight misfire on light throttle etc.

Cheers

Graham.

My guess would be the release bearing as well Chris.

Mine makes a bit of noise when i'm idling and when i pull away it does rattle a bit, but if i put my foot down on the clutch the rumbling goes away if i then take my foot of the clutch it does knock a bit as the clutch engages, it sounds like a 'donk' if anything

As i'm writing this i'm thinking to myself that i should get the clutch changed asap!

hope it helps

that rattle is very characterisitc of the 4x4 boxes used. my 30Kmile saph did it all the time, and walking doen the street the other day heard the same noise - turned round to see a 4x4 saph - my escos also sounded like this before the box was reconned - maybe worth changing the oil in the box to see if this helps first
