Default Cooling Fan wont switch off!!

Hi all, I'm new to the forums and came here to seek some proper advice.

I have just purchased a 2001 model, 51 plate Escort Turbo Diesel 55 van.

The problem initially was no heat coming through the vents, this was traced to a blocked heater core / matrix and the system was flushed through and now seems ok.

Now though, the cooling fan runs permanently. the chap fixing it said I needed a new cooling fan switch which I promptly went and got however when going to fix it, it is far bigger then the "bit" he had pointed out!!

When I disconnected the wire from the supposed cooling fan switch, the fan kept running!!!

So, either I have the correct part, but then I don't know where it goes or where to disconnect the cooling fan, or I have the wrong part, the mechanic was right in what he said was the "cooling fan switch" but why then does it still run when the wire / plug assembly is unplugged!!!!!!???

Can anyone help.....PLEASE?????

Also, the fuel consumption seems high for a TD van, less then 200 miles on half a tank and that's driving it considerately!!

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Rick.

The fan switch I think I am right in saying is on the stat housing on these and has a green housing. I think you are unplugging the wrong one as once you disconnect the switch it will stop fans running. It sounds as you have the right switch but you are disconnecting something else as it looks different and has no effect.

So the fans are on even from cold?

As for economy I would give it service first and if still no better get someone to have a look for a tune.

Thanks for that martin, will search out for the switch, have been told i could be at the bottom of the radiator!!!

As for the fuel consumption, it has just done 250 miles using 3/4 of a tank!! I dont rag it around, just drive it steady. Will try a service but im not sure how it will help.

Could it be a fuel pump setting or a turbo problem?

If it's been neglected it can massively effect economy amongst other things, it may be in the radiator but am pretty sure there on the stat housing, is the housing green? Is the turbo making boost ok?

If the ecu has logged a major fault, it will run the fans continuously, and alters fuelling at the same time to safeguard the engine, will still run but not at optimum.

If you follow the dipstick down you'll see a plug with 2 thick wires on going to the fan switch.

Cheers for the replies everyone, the fan is still running but the fuel consumption has picked up, did a run from Cambridge down to Exeter, 250 miles at a steady 70mph except for a legal 50 through the road works and it has still got over half a tank of diesel in it.

Tabetha...thanks for that, got it booked in for a full service etc so hopefully anything in the ECU will be picked up!!

AndyST......cheers for that, will check it out tomorrow morning!!

Thanks once again everyone for taking the time to reply.

Does the van have air conditioning? When that is switched on the fan will kick in. Also, on the focus's, when you put the interior vent position to windscreen, the air con will automatically come on and cause the fan to cut in too.

Does it come on when you turn on the ignition, or just when the engine is running?

Maybe a sticky relay? On my Escort the fan packed up and it was traced to the relay. Yours could be stuck on.
