Default Cooling Fan wont switch off!!

Hi all, I'm new to the forums and came here to seek some proper advice.

I have just purchased a 2001 model, 51 plate Escort Turbo Diesel 55 van.

The problem initially was no heat coming through the vents, this was traced to a blocked heater core / matrix and the system was flushed through and now seems ok.

Now though, the cooling fan runs permanently. the chap fixing it said I needed a new cooling fan switch which I promptly went and got however when going to fix it, it is far bigger then the "bit" he had pointed out!!

When I disconnected the wire from the supposed cooling fan switch, the fan kept running!!!

So, either I have the correct part, but then I don't know where it goes or where to disconnect the cooling fan, or I have the wrong part, the mechanic was right in what he said was the "cooling fan switch" but why then does it still run when the wire / plug assembly is unplugged!!!!!!???

Can anyone help.....PLEASE?????

Also, the fuel consumption seems high for a TD van, less then 200 miles on half a tank and that's driving it considerately!!

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Rick.
