hi mate I dont have an answer to your problem but I can help possibly. I had this problem with my Si escort and I put the fuel cleaner you get out any auto store or garage in and it sorted it. Dunno if it was possibly clogging fuel system somewhere but the stuff aint dear and worth a try?

hi mate I put in redex fuel system cleaner. I put it down to fact when low you have more chance of the crap in tank getting into system but tbh am not sure why it did it but I did this and it ran great again

Hi chap sorry but i doubt very much that fuel cleaner will help ur problem as u said ur self that the fuel gauge drops to nothin . i would sugest u start by checking and cleaning al your earths and the condition of ur fuse box and clean ur connections , then see how it runs , oh and welcome to the site

Open and shut the door? Sounds like a bad connection or bad earth, possible earths down by the osf kick pannel loose if there are any down there and moving when you open and close the door. I know the mk5 escorts suffered with bad fuse box problems causing electrical faults but dont know if this also happened with the mk6.
If you manage to find the fault and req parts I am breaking a R reg Gti and selling off the bits if that helps.

To be honest I'm not sure off hand, can look at my gti but only once its defrosted as at the moment its burried. Would have a look behin the kick pannels. Any brown wires (i belive thats the right earth wire colour) attatched to the body should be clean and tight.
