Default 1.8 Endura Turbo problem...

Hi all, I have a 1.8 2001 Ford Focus. Think it's the TDDI,,, Endura on the engine block. On motorway when smoke appeared, really thick... late night so not sure what colour. Checked under the bonnet and could see what looked like light oil spray from the big pipe which connects to the intercooler. Thought it was dripping oil onto the engine and making the smoke so nursed it off the motorway. Stil lloads of smoke. Oil level was OK and pressure seemed OK too. Stopped offthe motorway to check again... this time when I started up the oil light flickered on and power seemed to drop so switched off the engine and got trailered home. When returned home... engine cooled down and started OK with good oil pressure... enough to get it onto the drive. Engine sounded sweet with no noises. Oil is dripping from the exhaust also. Doesn't sound terminal but not good of course... any help welcomed. cheers, Phil

sorry fella take the pipe from the airfilter to the turbo off put yr finger into the turbo where there is sort of a fan it should spin easily but there should be no sideways play i think the bearings have gone on yr turbo which feeds oil straight into the system ie exhaust and engine induction system via its oil feed which is fed off main oilpump pressure and will empty the sump quickly careful with the comments fella i was trying to help thought u were a bit more experienced with cars

It's almost definitely the turbo, as said remove pipe between airbox and turbo, with engine stopped see if you can detect any play in the shaft that runs through the middle of the turbo, the one with the fan type wheel on it, lift up/down, try and move in and out, a tiny amount of up/down is normal, but any in/out movement is bad news.
There are no seals as such either end, so renewal or rebuild time, but not too bad price wise on these.
Not sure which make you have but suspect it is a KKK, the turbo repair places will know right away.
I use the turbo centre, 01924 404112, ask for andy or craig, they do a pick up and delivery service as well, may have one on shelf, or may just suggest having your one rebuilt.

Default Getting there!!!

Hi all, A quick update... I've managed to remove most of the pipework to the turbo and yes the fan (waste gate?) bearing is shot soit's a replacement job. Believe the easiest way to remove the turbo is with the manifold so that's the next step. Any pointers on this part of the job welcomed please. One query... I can feel two bolts which I think secure the oil feed and return which are tucked under the fan housing out of sight. Is it possible to undo these from above the engine or should I go from below after removing the plastic engine pan. Fiddly job but so far so good. This first part of the job took me about an hour and a half and that was feeling my way so optimistic that I can get the thing out and put a replacement back in! Thanks again in advance. cheers, phil

Default Stuck slightly!!!

OK... Engine pan off...vehicle upon stands... tried to undu the downpipe nuts which I think are the four accessible from above the engine and heres the rub. 13mm socket too small... 14mm slips round! Can see the the banjo holding the oil feed on no problem from below. Bit difficult to get to but not impossible. Then it's just a case of getting to and undoing the manifold nuts. That's assuming I can get those four bolts off! Help please!

These are often the hardest bit to do, spray bolts day before liberally with diesel fuel, as it's very thin and will creep into smaller places than wd40.
It may be necessary to bang a socket on there, rust may be stopping the correct size fitting.
Often I have had to weld bolts/sockets on to get them undone.
Check to see if a imperial socket is a better fit.

Default Focus exhaust bolts?

I've soaked the nuts with wd40 and oil but still can't get a socket onto them. 13mm too small...14mm seems too big... tried 1/2in AF also 9/16!!!!! Does anyone know what size they are please?
