Battery Light On Constant ERST
Right here we go again lol 1st of all I had a problem of battery light coming on after 3500 revs. I have changed alternator, which I thought would solve problem but to no avail I just have battery lioght on constant now. There also seems to be a grinding noise when you let of throttle higher up. Would it be possible a bad connection on starter bringing this light up? and grinding noise could be starter?

battery light staying on with the engine running normally points to a problem with the alternator. get a multimeter (voltmeter) and measure the voltage with the engine on and the engine off by put the prongs to battery terminals. voltage with engine off should 12ish, voltage with engine on should be 13.5-14.5 or there abouts.
its probably due to the voltage being too low with the engine running, because of a faulty alternator. the grinding noise could be something to do with it. maybe theres an issue inside?
might be best off slapping another alternator on and seeing if that changes anything.

well battery light indicates theres either to little voltage or to much voltage normally. unless you didnt connect the cable up to the new alternator? which i think will cause it not to charge, and throw this light on?
either way mate, check what the voltage is doing with the engine running, can trace the problem from there then.
it wouldnt suprise me if the new alt is dodgey though!
does the light get brighter or dimmer with more revs? do the headlights get brighter or dimmer at all?

Hi mate am sure everything connected will look again tomorrow, its had new alternator and battery, I just dont understand the noise when you let off as it only started when the light came on. Would light come on if starter jammed on? As then it would be taking the power away? BEats me am crap with eletrics! Any help would be great I will get a hold of readings to let you know what it at. Cheers and o the headlights etc stay the same when revved

check alternater blue wire thats the one that connects to the batt light
check starter disconnect the batt put a caonnection between the connections on the starter then just briefly touch the batt wires back on battery
is there a click as in the starter kicking in if so then its not sticking open if not then you have faulty starter
hope this helps

no fault with the starter will cause the battery light to come on, the only thing that will ever cause the battery ight to come on is an issue with voltage due to the alternator, or a wiring fault. it COULD be that youve shagged the blue wire taz is on about when youve been playing around with it, 20 years getting blasted by heat from a turbo couldve caused it to become brittle, and when youve moved it, youve broken it.
if the noises started at the same time the battery light came on then id say its deffo something alternator related. have you checked the belt tension etc?
even without seeing the car ill put money on the issue being with the alternator or belt somewhere along the line.

Just do the bloody simple thing and disconnect the blue wire with the ignition on, does the light go OFF, if it does then put multimetre on battery, not voltage start engine still with blue wire off, note reading now touch a LIVE onto the terminal from where the blue wire came, should be marked IND.
AS the live is touched on the alternator IND terminal the voltage should rise as it starts charging, you don't need to hold it there just a good positive touch is all it needs.
This LIVE touch it normally gets through the blue wire coming from the charge light, the IND terminal when it is charging turns Positive this then puts out charging light, as two positives won't make a light glow.
It is entirely possible for a new alt to be faulty, it is also entirely possible for a alt to be charging perfectly REGARDLESS of the light being on or off too.

Hey guys,
I have a auto elecy coming to check her over on tuesday too long without her lol but ive replaced alternator and starter now. ive checked the earths and the wiring seems ok although could be wrong somewhere as this is all I think it can be. its a new belt al tensioned etc but still giving off that squel noise. hopefully he can solve the problem cause my only other solution is to change the wiring. Thanks for the efforts though folks!

Had my rst for 3 years now, thats had x ammount of new electrical parts and just recently a whole new engine with fresh connections and earths. I cant think of a time my battery light hasnt been on or glowing.
But the car runs fine, everything works. so i tend not to worry about it. Might be dodgy wiring in the dashboard. These cars are 20 years old! lol
