Fiesta gearbox problem. Help!
Hi,
I have an R reg (1997) fiesta which needs a new gearbox (as driveshaft cracked and gearbox oil had leaked everywhere). I have been quoted £500-600 for a new one, but found a reconditioned one (with 12 month guarantee) for £120. This will end up costing about £450 all together with labour etc. But i've been told that sometimes when they replace the gearbox the clutch can get damaged & may need replacing too. This would obviously hike the price up more and i'm not sure the car is worth it if i have to pay for that too. if it's gonna cost loads i might have to count my losses and try & get a new car :-(
So i guess my question is, how likely is it that i'll need to buy a new clutch too? I'd ring the garage but they're shut now and need to decide what to do ASAP cos being carless is a total nightmare!
I hope someone out there can help me out with some advice on what to do?!
Thanks!

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
unless yr car is low mileage i would change the clutch anyway the gearbox is coming out so it will only b the price of the clutch for the sake of 100 quid or so i would call it a false economy not to do it

removing the gear box does not damage the clutch in the slightist, the clutch itself is protected by the pressure plate which itself is sturdy. To damage the clutch, you must be a amateur or very clumbsy, but like said if gear box is being removed you can take the clutch off to visually check it, if the clutch was perfectly fine prior to removal you can give the new clutch a miss, but id recommend having it changed, last thing ud want is to have to have it taken out again 6 months down the line due to worn clutch

20K+ Super Poster.
Unless very low mileage I too would change the clutch, I don't know the garage you are using, but some dodgy ones might deliberately contaminate the clutch with oil so that you will be back in a few months for one, but thankfully there are not many like this now.
What part of norfolkshire are you in ?
I'm still confused about driveshaft cracked so it leaked oil, do you mean gearbox casing ?, as driveshaft very substantial.
