Default Mondeo (V-Reg) Key cutting?

My in-laws only have one key for their Mondeo (V-reg) They've been quoted £400 by a Ford dealership to cut a new one!! TBH that's probably what the car's worth!!

Is there a cheaper option? Or maybe a way of getting a new key cut, then programming the car to accept the key?

On my VW There's a cable I bought on ebay for £10 that let me program newkeys etc, is there an equivalent system on Fords?

Or can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative?

Thanks

My local Fraud place will charge about £80 to supply and programme a key to the PATS immobiliser.

Try another Ford garage as they're taking the piss!!

There are other places that will do it, but what if they fudge up your one and only key? I'd go to Ford - at least that way, they have the equipment to put right any balls up.

£400!!!

Thats daylight robbery mate!

I cant remember how much it was to program keys at the ford dealer where i used to work but it certainly wasnt that much!!

From what I can remember we used to charge a little more to program keys on diesel mondys/escorts/fiestas etc due to the fact they took longer to erase the learned keys but again nowhere near that much!

Only way I can think for it to cost that much is if they quoted for a complete lock set change which naturally would involve more labour.

I'd agree with Puma_dal about taking it to fords to have the keys done as they have the correct equipment/software to do it properly. Ive had to do loads of cars where they have had attempts at programming keys by 'specialists' and ended up being recovered to us!

Anything later than S reg on mondys only have 2 black keys as opposed to 2 black and 1 red on the earlier ones.

If I remember correctly on the later 2 key system you need to program the keys via the WDS computer whereas on the earlier ones all you needed to program additional keys was the red master key.

Is it a blue or red chip key? If it's a red chip it's a piece of piss if you have the red master key.
