only when you brake you get a shake, not a voilent shake just like a wobble on the wheel

i can probably answer this right here and now..... and its an easy fix.
theres a bush on your steering column were it goes through the bulkhead. i bet you any money that if you knock this back flush to the bulkhead that it will sort the problem. this happened to me on my 4wd saph when i fitted a new steering column. i had my brakes, wheels, bottom arms etc checked and couldnt find the problem. i asked the ford mastertech at work and it was sorted it 10mins.
you can atleast try it and eliminate it...
good luck mate.

yeah, mine does that 'clonking' noise, it only vibrates on braking at approx 50mph, and at times it can feel quite violent.
the thing to do is tap the bush back into the bulkhead, and with a centre punch, punch a hole into the shaft just after the bush. this is suppose to stop the bush falling back down. who knows you might even be able to put a 'jubali clip' (spelling!) on the shaft to hold the bush in. just a possibility.
