Car starts and dies
Hey all,
I was out the other night and I jumped out the car at a mates house and left it running. it decided to die, as if it had ran out of fuel. So i cranked it over assuming it was a hic-up and it fired up again. As i was pulling away it would try to die when i pressed the throttle but idle if i didnt touch it. then a few more meters down the road it conked out and died. The car is a Ka with a FRST engine which I put in it last week. It has a full tank of fuel. I locked the fuel pump on by joining pins 87 and 30 on the fuel pump relay and still no luck. The pump seems to be primingg and running, though it is very quiet, but that may be because of all the fuel thats just been put in.
Today i decided to have another little look at it to see if if would fire at all. As it happens i would today. It ran for a min or two before dieing again as if it had no fuel. I fired it up again and it ran and sometimes would rev, sometimes it wouldnt. I've taken a video (very poor quality) showing at about 60 seconds when the throttle is opened the engine trying to die. the strange loud noises are the engine cutting out.
I tried disconnecting the TPS and this made no difference.
In the video it is also seen that the coolant swells up when the engine is revved. I dont believe that the head gasket has gone, and another KaRST member said that his coolant did this too. Can anyone say if its dodgey?

Any advice on the running issue? I'm thinking dying fuel pump or regulator.
Cheers

Nah, i'm sure its not getting fuel. The car has been running fine but over fueling somewhat. i think the key is that when the throttle is opened it tries to die. I just need someone with a bit more experiance to confirm what could be causing this... Failing that i'll start with the pump.

does the exhaust blow out any type of smoke when it tries to die or when you start it? blue, black, clear?
can you successfully rev it through the entire rev range when it isnt trying to cut out?

Nothing out the back that isnt expected, a little steam.
It will rev to 3kish no problem at all sometimes, i dont like reving above that when the engine is cold.

Do the KAs have an internal or external fuel pump?! Sounds identical to a prob i had my my 2i a year or so ago. After lots and lots of times fookin about it turned out to be a joining peice between the fuel pump and the pick up pipe coming out the tank!!! it has rubber seals which perished whiched caused the fuel pressure to drop causing it not to run cut out a few times then not starting properly at all, used to start it and rev it and it would run cough splutter revs would die then so would the car!!!
Way to check is get the car started and pull off the fuel return pipe to check if theres enough pressure pushing the fuel into the rail and back out again, on mine there wasnt!! so knew it was either pump end or regulator!! if u have 1 handy fitting a fuel pressure gauge on. The fez turbo engine is similar to the 2i so hopefully its just something like that or similar!! Could just be the regulator or something else maybe.......

It is an internal fuel pump. Most of the fittings looked in fair condition.
I'll try pulling the return line off and check for flow.
Cheers guys, keep the ideas coming!
