Do the KAs have an internal or external fuel pump?! Sounds identical to a prob i had my my 2i a year or so ago. After lots and lots of times fookin about it turned out to be a joining peice between the fuel pump and the pick up pipe coming out the tank!!! it has rubber seals which perished whiched caused the fuel pressure to drop causing it not to run cut out a few times then not starting properly at all, used to start it and rev it and it would run cough splutter revs would die then so would the car!!!

Way to check is get the car started and pull off the fuel return pipe to check if theres enough pressure pushing the fuel into the rail and back out again, on mine there wasnt!! so knew it was either pump end or regulator!! if u have 1 handy fitting a fuel pressure gauge on. The fez turbo engine is similar to the 2i so hopefully its just something like that or similar!! Could just be the regulator or something else maybe.......
