2liter zetec blacktop. easy to tune and good to turbo. not to bad to get into the gti either. just a few things to swap over i.e. the flywheel, sump, oil pick up pipe.

no point buliding a turbo with your 1.8. if your gonna go through the hassel of building a turbo motor the 2.0 will give you much better scope for big power.i think they push out 130bhp in standard trim, most breakers will have black tops. you find them in late mondeos and focous they arent to exspensive either, some breakers let them go for as little as Ł150. if your doing a straight (putting the standard lump in) you need the ecu and engine loom from the same car as the engine again not exspensive.

not sure the black top is a straightforward swap, certainly the 2.0 silvertop out of the mondeo is a strait swap bar flywheel, sump, oil pickup pipe and anciliaries. think the black top has slightly different engine mount pounts.

i'm plannin on doin a 2.0l mondeo transplant in mine in a year or 2 (when insurance allows) and then gettin a blacktop head worked on with some cams and throttle bodies an that will bolt straight onto the silver top block

lots more info on stuff like this on feoc-uk.com and escortevolution.co.uk

thanks very much for that mate, its what iv been told aswell by a mate whos very much into his cossies and owns a very well known Orion. He said to get the silvertop drop it in for time being as its straight forward an available at Ł150, then to get a blacktop head and either put cams and chip or turbo it.

apparently the silvertop engine has a better bottom end than the blacktop, but the blacktop has a better cyl head so the two mixed and matched are perfect for turbocharging!!

oh, i thought the black top had a better bottom end aswell. thought it was stronger aswell as better length con rods an better sized bores which makes it more responsive to tuning but dont take my word for it as i aint researched it and the info i have is second, third or maybe even fourth hand.

still, cant be a bad combination and atleast the standard conversion is cheap as chips

it only gets expensive when doin charging or throttle bodies as need aftermarket managment aswell

A 2.0 ltr swap makes sense. No point doing the cams when the standard ones are good for 170 bhp. It is the inlet and mapping that hold the power back.

what sort of power output and boost are you looking for? if you want to turo it on a budget you can keep standard internals with arp bolts fitted and use a decompression plate between the head and block, but from what ive been told in here you have to run very low boost,

conrods are longer and pistons are shorter so the length is the same overall.
they are interchangeable between black top and silvertop as bore size is the same but the blacktop has slightly dished pistons so compression would be tits up.
the black top is 130bhp and silvertop is 137bhp.
silvertop is a direct swap.
black top needs more work as it has different water pump arangement but it does have better head with solid tappets for higher revving.
