Default ford capri, a worthwhile restoration??

hi, thinkin of getting myself a 2.8i capri for a restoration project. what in terms of tuneability, brake upgrades, suspension etc are we talking??? ive looked but cant seen to find anywhere on the net that can help, or sell much.

ideally im thinkin stripdown and rebuild, want more poke outa engine, and lower it with better brakes. what stats are standard and what can be achieved out the 2.8 lump?? cheers

The big problem with Capris is rust. Find the best shell you can, a few extra hundred for a good shell is a lot cheaper that welding in new sill and wings etc.

The top tip with a Capri is to fit the Cosworth 24v V6 from the late Granadas to give a cheap 200 bhp.

Capri brakes problems are often down to knackered brake lines and components. With all new components a Capri will brake very well considering the age. All the upgrades for Mk 1 and 2 Escorts fit if you want even more braking power.

Loads of suspension upgrades are available and with new shocks and springs and polly bushes the handling can be brilliant, even in the wet!!

Interesting, this is good timing - was just asking on Pistonheads about exactly the same thing and got pointed here for expertise.

Reading the guide PPC mag did on the 24v engines and how they drop straight into Sierras got me thinking about this - Wardy (or anyone for that matter) is the conversion as easy with a Capri? The article gave the impression that it drops straight in on XR4 mounts?

This has got me thinking, would therefore the engine in this for example:
http://www.gumtree.com/london/44/15303544.html

Drop painlessly into XR4 mounts on something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1981-FORD-CAPRI-CALYPSO-GREY...

Or not? This newer might be the wrong gen of Scorpio, in which case would the engine from this work? Or ar both the same?

I may have missed loads here. Is there a guide anywhere or writeup by anyone who's done this conversion? Theres just something about a tatty Capri with a 200bhp 3ltr modern 24v in it for less than a grand all in that appeals, bure I'm sure I've missed loads out and would appreciate the combined passsionford knowledge setting me straight

Too much time on eBay does this to a man. I'm keen to learn about the oily stuff, and I reckon a cheap winter project may be the way forward. But is this too ambitious..

Yyou'll need to use the engine crossmember from either a 2.8 or 3.0 capri, not a 1.6 or 2.0 item, along with the 2.8 capri engine mounts. Job done on that front.

Cheers Jon - so essentially a 24v Cosworth engine will drop straight into a 2.8i Capri?

Does it matter if it comes from the older shape Granada or the more rounded newer one? As per links above

Either engine will drop straight in. I don't know if either the BOA or BOB have particular weaknesses or advantages - someone else'll have to answer that one.

If anyone can point me towards a guide/account of someone elses experiences with this it would be very much appreciated

Ok thanks Wardy I'll try that.

Sounds like it's a fairly commonplace procedure so should be lots of info I guess
