I personally would just put it down to primitive mechanical instruments, that are 14-20 years old

Ive seen it on allsorts of makes/models of cars, it usually only wobbles within a certain speed, and is fine when below or above it

well its a new box in there well second hand-new , fitted it last night and noticed the needle wobble - autometer speedo is brand new so cant be that and its electrical not ford cable.

Have to check the seals tonight

Can't see seals making a difference - but obviously you will lose oil.

Odd

Odd
anytime ive had a wobbly needle ive had a gearbox leak to go with it,mate replaced the diff seals(think it was those) and the wobbly needle stopped,
how is the actual speedo sensor in the gearbox operated?,is it fliud operated?
could explain it then

JamboRST, its gear driven off the differential.

That must just be purely co-incidental?!

I have heard it could possibly be the diff bearings causing this

im just going on what my mate told me,he's a ford mechanic and a very good one at that,as far as i know its a strip down to get to the seals
also have experienced it on other rst's also on my old diesel van
coincidence it may be but if it solves the speedo wobble then who cares

You don't have to go so defensive I was only saying aswell!

A wobbly needle can onyl really be caused by a worn instrument or a fluctuating output on the speedo drive. Hence why i can't see a leaky seal doing it.

Were you talking about the driveshaft oil seals?

Tell you what it could be, the speedo drive gear is nylon and they are prone to wear and snap teeth

not 100% sure what actual seal it is,ill try and get the info over the weekend if i see him,but its defo a strip down box job to get to them i mind that much

How badly does it wobble anyway, if your diff bearings were gone you would know about it mate

Usually, when the diff bearings wear out, the diff starts to move in directions it's not meant to. This will wear out the shaft oil seals and the plastic (red) speedo drive gear.
The speedo drive ger can be pulled out easily, so it's best to check tht first. If it's gone to a concave shape, then the bearings have definately gone.

Always found a wobbly speedo was due to one thing on Fords, lack of grease on the end which plugs into the back of the clocks. Take it out and grease it, replace it and it's should work perfectly.
