Default s***ey cvh rattles - HELP

HI to all ford fanantics & boost junkies alike. I've got a mk4 scort 3i efi, blowered up, running frst efi, 165 superchips, biege inj., piper 285T, new stage 2 blower running 12psi, bottom end from my old S2, and from day dot the f***in thing rattles it's nuts off. Small ends were checked when built - ok, new tappets, new rocker arms & inserts, lapped valves, you name it. Now the noise/ rattle only occurs under load (hard boost, 3k rpm & above) & coming off hard boost, coasting along is fine - no rattles. It can't be pre-ignition cause the beige's chuck loads in, it runs rich - you can smell it plus the lump would of popped by now. It can't be small ends cause we checked them for play & it's only 2,000 or so miles since, 500 of which under 3k rpm. It can't be oil press. cause we gauged that & that's all hunky dory, & i replaced the tappets BUT it is very much like a tappet rattle (i think). So if any1 can shed any light on this situation it would be much appriciated & you would be deemed a star (in my veiw anyway). Think i've covered everything i did there. I've got a couple 2L zetec lumps which i know is the way forward over the s***ey cvh but until i get time to do that i'd like to blat & boost the blower around without the embarresment of soundin like a john deer chugin up the road rather than a turbo purrin . Thanks in advance to any1 who can help. Happy boostin. Paul.

Well you seem to of checked a lot of things, the only thing i will point out is its useless replacing the hydraulic lifters in a CVH. Cam wear causes the lifters to wear, if the cam is knackered it will turn new lifters into scrap in minutes.

The only way forward is a new cam and lifters.

Second hand cams are a bit of a no no......usually ok if they're kept with all the original lifters are re-installed in the same order as they came out in but even then aren't always right.

Number 4 are the lobes prone to wear first, due to design faults on head.

All of the lobes bar the exhaust one on number 4 should have that tiny little trace of the black coating left on it. But it will be obvious if the cams gone, half way up the lobe u will see pitting where the hardened surface has come off, and also look at the bases of the lifters, any dishing to any of them and you've got a lobe/lobes gone.

I love turbo's, i think you should be moaning about Fords Nah They're not that bad its all in the servicing, my B reg 84 Orion Ghia injection is on 106k and thats got the original cam, just starting to get a very slight tap. Its done well to last that long!

Lots and lots of oil changes

yeah your right, turbos are great thats why i'm hooked on them, way before their time in terms of looks & performance, but as for the cvh engine & mfi fuel system, well unfortunately maybe makes the turbo the most faulted car ever? I know so many people that have chucked pound after pound at their turbo especially upgrading & it's still not going right after that that. Nightmare. So r u running boost in your onion?

The orion in the sig is dead, my orion i have now, no, its a standard car and well looked after it would seem aswell. Took the turbo lump out of that gold one and launched it in a cabriolet, which is going EFI next for the above mentioned reasons

No.

As it stands the car is a MK3 with Series 2 wiring patched in as i wanted to retain the original loom, i'll take it back out and patch the EFI stuff in won't be too bad. Why do you ask?

oh cause that's what i'm going to do my mk5a 3i 130 rs2k lookalike, use mk4 efi loom, frst ecu etc, 2l zetec lump. I've unpicked the the mk4 3i loom & to my surprize it just 4 wires needed to chop into the existing mk5 loom eng. bay loom plus sensors, most of which already on the zetec lump, if not all

Probably be easier to use a FRST loom, good chance that will near on plug straight up aswell, and u can keep the proper MK5 loom, im not afan of putting the wrong looms into shells especially when you forfeit things, like on my car it would of been the auxiliary warninf system.

Its only on MK3's, petrol light, brake pad wear warning light, low coolant & washer bottle light, and oil level light.

Not something you will have to worry about in yours, but i just like to keep all the original features of the car.

i see, i thought so honestly just not fully functioning at the mo. But u could retain all that could'nt u? it's only 4 wires to hook the frst ecu's & sensors up with power & to the fuel pump relay if i remember rightly & everything stays as is. & the frst loom is the same as the 3i efi loom cause that's what i did with my 3i/ turbo, plugged the frst ecu & map straight in & away she went

I think theres a few more wires than 4 but its not many. The FRST loom and 3i loom aren't the same, near on, if you're running OFAC it will plug straight up and 1 wire needs cutting, OFAB you also need to make a couple of pin changes, chnage the plug for the MAP sensor and wire in the suppressor on the map sensor signal wire.
