What on earth is the point using a second hand cam in a cvh? They're scrap after 20-30k miles anyway, better getting a new one or a re-grind

Second hand is pretty pointless as it will most likely be quite worn, if it isn't then make sure you get the lifters too and keep them matched to their respective lobes.
If you do go new then I recommend a Newman cam, other pattern part cams are very risky these days.

im not shooting the messenger, it's your advice which isn't very good IMO, (sorry about that)as not only will it be worn to fook but you need the matched worn out lifters to go with it.

I never gave anyone any advice whatsoever I just passed on some contact details. And going on the subject of cvh cams I spent my entire youth working on them and having them as daily drivers and lost count of the amount of them I had to swap bits over to keep them running. In fact me and the guy I was apprentice to build a very early Zvh in year 2000 I think it was, I put a second hand cam in that out of a rotten xr3 and 15 years later that same engine is still going in the xr2 the engine ended up in and apart from regular servicing it's never gone wrong. But yeah your supposed to change cam and tappets for new or keep them matched but sometimes due to lack of availability of parts or funds then u do what u have to do.

15 years on the same cam in a cvh no doubt it does run if you say so, but it will be scrap and won't have the same profile it went in with really pleased you spent your entire youth working on them, it doesn't mean nobody else did.

There's an old boy who used to live down the road from me until I moved house, still see him every now and again and he's had a series 2 rst since it was brand new. Also his friend who is an ex ford mechanic at the other end of his road has had a saph Cossie since new and has always worked on this escort for his mate. Had many many conversations over the years about the cars. I thought sod it I'll give him a ring this evening and just had a good chat with him, his mates escort rst is used every single day unless the owner takes his van for the dj work he does now he's retired and has never ever had the cam even removed from the car and the ex ford mechanic has

For him. He did tell me that they do suffer from cam and tappet wear due to owners not changing the oil at the required intervals and not using the correct grade. The only other thing that used to cause accelerated wear was the old mechanical fuel pumps that used
To run off the cam and cars sat being unused for long periods of time.

It may still work but it won't be the same shape and won't produce the performance of a fresh grind.

You could service it every day and it would sti be scrap after 30k

Each to their own but back to my original post you'd have to be mental to use a second hand cam on a cvh unless it was a proper low power poverty build just to get it running

that's granted, same as in a lot of cars that age. But hey ho no point arguing over a now ancient engine that was a load of poop anyway lol.
