Default trouble cold starting with a back fire

when the car has been stood over night or durin the day, it doesnt start first time, this has come more and more over the last few months (head gaskets aside) the fuel pump primes and the ISCV clicks, then i go to crank and teh rev coubnter needle boigs up wildly as the car cranks...

it wont fire though, ot i mean it does fire but not enought to actually get it running, as you let off the key, it half runs for a moment but not with enough umph to actually run.

i try again, and this time there is a loud bang and a backfire from the back, again, not running.

3rd time, i crank it fires and runs smoothly , even then restarting once its initally run, it starts ok.

what should i be checking for... last time the bang, flames and backfires were the crank sensor - ive re checked this and made sure the connectors are clean, all ok. when else can cause the boingy needle...? ive converted to coilpack aswell btw and the multiplugs under the bonnet have been donw away with by soldering them together and heat shrinking each cable individually.

Phase sensor? It's the only other rotational sensor for the engine. Jumping rev counter would indicate that the spark is being fired ramdomly...
