Sounds like the timing is wrong, double check it and always turn over by hand first!!!

id take the timing belt back of and make sure the timing marks on the belt are in the right place lined up with tdc marks on crank and head pullys. as long as they are where they should be you cant go wrong.

by how far was the cam timing out?

if it was out by a lot you could have bent valves mate....

get a compression tester on it.
