Roof aerial
How do folks.....
Now unfortunately my sapphire's roof has in the past had a aerial mounted on the rear of the roof.
The one fitted has been removed and the hole left had been covered with a modern "shark fin"
styled item.
Not very infitting with the original look I'm after, so it's now off awaiting a suitable replacement.
Was there ever one fitted by Ford's to the roof??
Pictures of what's been fitted by you guys or previous owners would help or any suggestions.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
As far as I am aware Saffs front windscreen has an in-built aerial, never seen a roof mounted one and I am glad you took the BMW style one off your roof, it looked horrendous!!
Had my 2wd Saff for 23 years, never had a roof aerial.

I did wonder, I've been through Google and the data base on here and not found one picture.
What you say about the windscreen aerial is interesting as the radio won't pick up any signal but is connected to a lead
but what that goes to is now in question.
thanks

The first Saph's (non Cosworth) had the aerial on the offside rear wing.
Others have copied what Ford done 30 years ago.

Do 4x4's also have this amplifier as I have never noticed it in the near 20 years I have owned my car. (interestingly my signal also appears to be fairly weak) I would also be interested in a photo of the exact location. Thanks David

So many options but if I get it wrong it will stand out like a sore thumb.
I have a ecos one somewhere complete so will have a look at that.
cheers

The amplifier should be the first thing you check (beneath the back window) it should have an ignition switched live.
The first Saph's (non Cosworth) had the aerial on the offside rear wing.
The rear window contains the aerial, a good idea which was done to prevent vandalism.

Windscreen is the only answer. Wonder why when the original one got broken the owner did'nt insist on the correct one being fitted?

Thing is I've now got a 10mm hole in my roof.
I've dug 2 aerials out to choice from, I think I'll be getting it plated and the roof painted anyway after summer.
The bee sting style is a smaller version off what you see on mk4 golfs and corsa c's...not sure where I got that from....
what do you think??

Mine also unfortunately has a roof aeriel fitted, I can only assume this was done for a mobile phone as the holes are in the dash where the phone would have gone. Im also going down the route where I will have to have it plated & painted.

Just for reference, the heated element is the aerial. The banding round the edge that you can see is on all versions.
on the pre Jan 1990 models it was visible, Ford just moved it when the face lifted the car in 1990.
if you go to the amp box under the shelf trim, the wires go straight from that to the window element connections. I would check the small feed wire to the amplifier as that is what powers the aerial part up. It is normally red/white and is also in the back of the radio. If this is good, most likely the amplifier box is dead. Even if some of the heated elements are not working on the window, there is still a circuit for the aerial.

The 90s bee sting aerial is a winner for me, in fitting with the cars era when everyone was fitting them to their cars
I have one on my 3 door (rep) due to wanting the car to look symmetrical i think the oe ford aerial location looks odd

I wonder if Martin (Martysmartie) or Ian (Iansoutham) or anyone else for that matter, can confirm when the red/white wire (30-29 on the schematic) is supposed to be live. Martin mentioned that it is an ignition switched live, but I am wondering why it is supplied via the radio and not just switched via the ignition. My thoughts are that it is possibly only live when the radio (as opposed to CD etc) is on perhaps like the electric aerial drive feed they used to put out on stereos. My car (1990 4x4) had had a different head unit fitted before I purchased it 18 years ago, and over the weekend I was fitting a different unit and noticed the red/white wire is not connected at all. Although I haven't checked at the amplifier yet, I am assuming this is therefor unpowered, which would account for my weak signal mentioned in a post further up. Interestingly the radio works perfectly well when there is a strong signal around, only breaking up a bit when I get close to home which is in a bit of a valley. I mention this because I wonder how many others have fitted a new head unit and only connected up the battery and ignition feeds and a ground, possibly the lighting feed (grey/yellow) if needed and not realised what the other wires were for. (aerial amp feed and alarm) I will attach the diagram again in case that helps. I had attached this and a couple of others related in another post by qed296 asking about his stereo wiring which can be found here. https://passionford.com/forum/techni...tion-help.html . Thanks David

I'll drop the back seats tomorrow and have a look and get some pictures for reference.
Since my 1st post I've been out about and have had some radio but not much, must be getting some sort of signal.
This car did have a massive sound system in it when I bought it which has been removed.
I wonder if somethings not as it should be with the wiring.......so many questions....

I guessed it would be from the ignition radio feed, but from the diagram it appears it's an actual output from the head unit, as you say.
OP should check whether there is power in the first instance and then can troubleshoot accordingly.
