Default Tools to take for Ford Fair just in case in a sapphire Cossie

All

I'm always paranoid anywhere I go in the sapphire, even with a full engine rebuild last year lol, Always got a full tool box in the boot, spare spark plugs, leads, plug spanner with extension, water bottles, cable ties, breaker bar, etc, anyone else carries emergency tools in the boot? or is this just me?

Carry a few bits in the car but not as much as you, wheel brace, small socket set, a little anti freeze, some spare light bulbs etc, that's normally about it really. I would think with everything you have you should be ok, I mean you cant realistically take your workshop with you.

YB = Yes Broken...get a full Snap On van to follow you.

Realistically it will be the bit you don't have the part or tool for. AA membership is the best you can hope for along with above and maybe some cable ties, jump leads and a big bottle even if empty so you can fill up with water.

I almost find if you stock up and take loads of tools, you never need anything.

In the other case if you take nowt, sods law states you will have an issue!!

Ford Fair is an 800 mile round trip for us and Saff didn't miss a beat last year. Sad to be missing it this year but hey ho!

I have had my 2wd Saff for 21years, in all that time I have never worried that I need a boot full of tools and spares when I go out in it.The only things I take are a 1litre bottle of oil, some engine coolant and power steering fluid as they are really the only thing it may need.If you look after it it will be as reliable as any other car.Even after a trip up to York and back from Southampton it only needed a small amount of power steering fluid.
Have confidence in it and enjoy driving it!

Very nice mate, that's stunning

I have owned my car of over 20 years, back then it was my daily car, but it just sits in the garage now for the past 3 years so my fault really for not using it more often. it has been reliable thu, just like to be over prepared if the worse happens, especially with the little one in it.

My shakedown outing with the new engine is going to be Reading to Donnington for the RSOC National Day.
Suffice to say I'll be taking one or two tools and emergency kit with me just in case.
AA Membership on stand-by too!!

I agree with cossienut. Take some oil and coolant.

I went to fordfair from the north east. I also did a track session and drove home.

I went in 2014 and was stuck in traffic. The bloody car overheated lol. Bloody dodgey fan switch. Now ive got a proper fan loom with the manual switch inside.

Never carried anything other than the normal jack and wheel brace.
Bit different if you are doing a trackday but on the road I don't see the need.
Even after completely reselling the car I didn't take any tools on its maiden voyage.
AA card is there if it does let me down but thats only ever happened once when I smashed the diff.

This thread makes me laugh, I didnt realise there are so many Saff owners who have no faith in their cars, look after them and they are no different to any other car. If I had to have the boot full of tools and spares every time I go out in my car"for when it breaks down" I would just sell it and buy something else.
A few basics the same as most people have in any other cars and breakdown cover the same as 90% of people have and away you go!

Jumpstarter powerpack, socket set with screwdrivers and a good jack.

It annoys me having to carry that much if I'm honest.

I did 1700 miles in 5 days to the ring and back in my Sierra without a single problem and that includes track time, only took very basic tools and oil/anti freeze ect as I had breakdown cover so wasn't too bothered tbh. It's been more reliable than my daily.

I've had my fair share of breakdowns but thankfully none in a Sierra

WHY do you have to? If your Saff is that unreliable you need to have a mobile mechanics tools with you every time you take it out why not just sort out its problems?
Do you have those things in your other cars?

To be fair the sapp has been good as gold for the past 16 years, i've sorted out all the common issues with it, so doesn't miss fire or over heat, upgraded fan loom, fuel pump rewire, group A Head gasket, as it went big time last year driving to ford fair. I drive a 5 series as an everyday car, so never worry, its just in an old car, always listening out for horrible noises or issues, so carry tools as a back up.

Cosworths are reliable as anyother car lol. Only times I ever had mine brake down and towed in about 10 years and mine was quite heavily modified was twice breaking the diff and when I broke a piston. Other than that only faults I had was battery going flat due to lack of use and once it wouldn't start as a terminal fell off the fuel pump relay. Can't wait to start using mine again next year and the only thing I carry in mine is a torch and a small bottle of oil / some rag.

I don't HAVE to, I CHOOSE to.

There are no problems mechanically now as they're all fixed.

To be fair I have a fiesta too as a cheap runaround and I carry the exact same things in the boot, just in case. Powerpack, socket set and a jack. I don't think it's OTT really as I've left the lights on twice at work in both cars Came out to the car park after a 12 hour shift and battery dead.

Hopefully won't happen again

Philip.

Glad to hear you have fixed any mechanical problems you may have had on your Saff, have faith in it and go for a run without your powerpack, jack , socket set etc. There is no reason for it to let you down.

Feel for you, that is very bad luck and a very unusual thing to happen, no amount of tools etc in the boot can help you in that situation!
Hope you get it sorted out ok.

I was just being extra extra cautious as last year driving to ford fair it split the small heater water matrix pipe, which i repaired, overheated and cooked my head gasket, (Took us near 5 hours coming back), anyway since then Jano @Odd Kidd re-buit it and has not let me down since. The car stayed cool all day even stuck in 3 hours of traffic. Well chuffed with Janos work.
