500+hp Capri. but with one SMALL difference..

Yours would be better with a new bonnet/boot and with the rear windows sorted out! Just looks so gash at the minute, the filler job on the windows in particular is dire!

oh its VERY nice! but, understand this, when i sat there on the phone ready to insure that merc when i got it, and you can imagine at over 100k new in 1996 with all the things you could ever prob want in it, i thought, na. i couldnt see myself enjoying it that much. it looks too normal. i know the capri isnt exactly how i want it and god knows it wont be for many years, but a normal car. i cant drive it. engine, auto box, warm heating etc etc GREAT! but id fade into the background. even if i painted it illuminous green id be constantly saying ' i wish i had the capri'. 'its not the same' and id be moaning all the time about it! i'd see the rat rodders and anyone else with something that stands out and id be bored shitless no matter what engine i had under that bonnet!

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
I'm never one to piss on anyone's chips but this is mental. Even if it all goes tits up, you'll never get your beloved Capri back together as a plan B.
I love the idea of the engine/running gear and car combo but it needs doing slightly diferent to your plan. The most logical plan would be to downsize the Merc to a c-class of some variety, a much more manageable combination of shell and floorpan.
If you're set on your plan, have a go. You will learn a hell of a lot along the way. But expect plenty of "I told you so" along your journey.
Good luck

yeah it will.
the only reason the floorpan is bigger than the capri is because i have not chopped off the bits i dont need yet! i will get some better pics of it at some point, but there is soo much room to play with when you ACTUALLY LOOK at the construction... so long as i remove the dash after the doors windows etc and i get the support frame RIGHT, it should work. but i maywell have to ditch the suspension, lower it and put lower profile tyres on to bring the wheels closer to the body... not sure yet but it looks likely. the bonnet i may have to ditch and get someone to make a fiberglass mould or something to compensate for the engine height....
the only thing that makes that car TOO wide to simply dump on that shell is the two very thick sills down the sides of the car.. but again, removing them and using capri ones set further in should be fine. ill have to make an 'hourglass' frame ultimately.
it will be a capri, but with a different engine. the capri body stamp will still be there for identification, but if you wanna get daft over it, you can say well the arch over the gearbox and prop are merc, the bulkhead and rear tops mounts, the front top mounts and the inside panels and bulkhead for the front are merc too. cos thats it basically.
as much as id like to use some of that dashoard i dont think i can alter it enough to fit.. unless its just the center console bit...

I bet it is .
You seem deluded by the task of swapping the panels around so the merc looks like a capri.
not bieng funny or rude but your level of fabrication and welding are no where near where they need to be to take on this conversion.
you'd be better trying to fit the merc engine into the capri.

to be honest, i think the dash is the least of your worries.
This isnt going to end well, save yourself the time, money and effort before its too late.

so how do you plan to cut out and remove the capri floorpan, while holding the shell in a position it wont bend in, then cut the merc floor out, shorten it and place it under the capri shell, then seam weld it all in, ensuring it would pass any goverment test thrown at it? out of genuine interest.

You have to be kidding about getting this project legal,
as soon as you start chopping into the floor pan and chassis, you looking at going to a q plate if your lucky. if your unlucky it'll never get on the road.
what you are building is a cut and shut, taking two cars and welding them together into two, you are making serious changes to the structure of the car, and to be honest your welding skills dont seem up to the task.

do i look worried about saftey? not particularly! safety will come with the addition of a form of rollcage..
if it has to be qplated then that is what ill get.

Wow, this thread is doing the rounds on some other forums and I couldn't resist dropping by and commenting.
Check out this thread on uklegacy.com for someone chopping together a subaru legacy engine, suspension and floor into a mini metro. The size differences are probably similar to what you're facing, so you might get some inspiration / hints / tips. Might even be worth dropping them a line!

Anyway, good luck with it!

Well, at least filler-covered, badly painted, rusty shards of what once was a Capri!

and how are you going to insure a roll caged, modified car on a q plate, if you cant insure it in standard form?

do you think there just using wood for mock up before making them in carbon fibre
And the handles on the boot lid are to aid bump starting
