My Xr4i 24v Drift car - Restoration/Becoming a BDC licence holder stage
Well,
I havent set off any build/spec/anything on any ford forums mainly just driftworks as well its my drift car..
Whilst im stuck in the house now bored with no money because of this car lol i thought i might aswell show you what im up to and hopefully will get lots of info/tips of you veterans with old fords!...
Ive been hitting shows since the age of 6 with my dad and other family members, always ford shows as we are a ford based family who have always had fords around us..
Im now 18 and hoping for a go at getting my drift licence next year in the British Drift Championship but my car needs to be upto spec!
My founds with the car where more then i could hope for if im honest:
24v cosworth engine (roughly 205bhp/same torque i beleive?)
Koni Adjustables all round
LSD (Wasnt best thing but it did well on the day)
2 Recaro 3door seats, not as good as bucket seats and harness but done the job
lots of skid wheels.
Well i got this from my dad when i was 15 which looked like this:
People may remember it from passed ford fairs/national days/croft etc etc..
Now i loved this car the way it was back then and didnt want to change a thing...but i also wanted a decent drift car and couldnt afford anything competitive, so a few words with my dad and with his support i decided at having a go at making a drift car from it, bare in mind this was in 2007, the reason for it was....
well by the time this i made my choice to use it as a drift car i was 16, a year had gone with nothing done to the car other then starting it up every now and then, pretty much a waste in my eyes...im the sort of person who likes to see a car used and not buffed up, trailer queen but i am also one who likes to look after cars...so you get the idea of what was going through my head...
Now first step was to strip the baby out to loose as much weight as possible:
So now that the striping was done...or as much as i could do at the time...it was time to get drifting...
Here is a video from when i had a go at first drifting this car, very small clip but it shows its capable with mininum of goods:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0d8mVQnu0o
Now since then i really got the urge for making this a full track weapon...
starting with selling some stuff to fund others.
First thing was taking the viscous fan off as i had been told its good for a few extra bhp without spending much money:
Then along came a set of twin electric cossie fans which are now fitted, i am a level 2 college student doing mechanics, now i have above average knowledge in MV as ive messed with cars since a young age and know whats what but my huge weakness is electrical, i have wired up my twin fans myself but will need re doing as its not the best of jobs or neatest!..
Moving on, few weeks down the line..a few goodies:
ERST recaro for passenger seat
Soon they went out the window to be replaced with better seats:
So then the car had FIA spec Buckets and Harnesses to obtain safety rules....sweet!
Please bear in mind im trying to remember the steps of the way, as this has all happened in past 2/3 years..
Next thing to do was mechanical..
Diff change was in order...i sold my LSD to a guy and bought a welded diff from RobsRS2...he has been a legend with help for me...always helpful and willing to chat.
So now having built up a quite huge collection of randomly coloured wheels and tyres....
and a half drift prepared car i had a smile on my face:
With big hair!.
Anyway....moving on slowly but surely with my £20 a week ema and what ever else i could sell off the car to fund what i needed to compete/build my car:
i got some smalled headlights for for the main reason to allow more air into the engine bay, as going sideways isnt really allowing air hit the front of your car much..so more gaps the better was what i was thinking...
Which then ended up with a front end like this, not really pretty but functional...
Motto being "Function Over Form!"......
so there it was...
Then i had some problems with a drive shaft on the back, thought my welded diff broke but gladly my mate just forgot to put the rest of the driveshaft bolts back in, and with only 1 bolt in, yes one bolt lol, it was free to turn and make queer noises...
so up it went again, in my ever so small garage:
Beauty and the beast:
Fixed that and jobs a goodun...sort of...
this isnt where it ended i am still typing and writing my everlasting story but you lot can read this firstly then ill add some more in 10mins or so when i get all pictures sorted

In my car i have 2 Looms yes, 2 looms...one for the old 2.8 and the one for the 2.9..
I really really want to get rid of as much wiring as possible but sadly i aint skilled enough to do it myself...altho i probally could do it im scared lol...yep scared. and i really cant afford the £100s for an auto electrition to come out and fiddle...
If anyone near/in or around sunderland could come and help me, id pay for there fuel, beers, food, drinks whatever all day ?????
Anyway...moving on
at the start of this year i wanted to go in for my bdc licence and thought i had the right funds to do so...but i worked it all out and sadly couldnt..so it has been put off till 2010.
so now im sitting with a car and not much to do...i thought go all out and get it done so this is what ive bought and currently looking for:
Bought:
6/soon to be 10 Point Safety Device FIA rollcage Which turns up this friday coming:
Compbrake Hydraulic handbrake, got here now:
25ft of new brake lines, got here now
On the order list:
Minilights (what is in photoshop further down)
Mk2 Escort forrest arches
Fuel and Battery cut offs
Plumbed in fire extinguisher
So as you can see my plans for the cars looks are changing fast..
This is what the end article will look like, but will have Cage, Side exit zorts.
So now..
a few months ago, i went round to the garage to start to dismantle:
Off the floor it came..Bumper off for little more head room lol
Off comes the diff and all other bits and peices on the rear end...
Off with the diff hanger and arms:
Off with springs and tank:
I also pick the best weather to work in :
as soon as all body work is done, i have broke my 200sx but kept the turb and manifold, as when i get the car back home, it will be getting a turbo...i wanted to go supercharger route but ive been told via rob that they are hard to mount and alot of faff on....i ideally wanted no boost/lag etc but some boys in BDC are running 400+bhp and need to be given them a good run for there money in there £20k cars
Well thats the story soo far, My rollcage will be turning up this friday coming so i will probally get to my new lock ups saturday with that for a mock up, then i will be on the hunt for a decent/cheap bodywork person to fit it and also do all welding on the car...so the car and i will be seperated for a few months for the first time in 3 years lol....will be worth it tho when its all finnished/restored and smoking it up sideways...
To reveal and not to bad car.....i expected the worce for safety reasons lol...but im more then happy with the lack of rust under there..
Now this is where the rust shows :...
Both sills need doing i already know that
Rear arches, one is worce then the other but its getting wide forrest arches anyway:
Rear bumper hangers...not expected but not too bad:
Which old ford doesnt need welding in its time? lol.....
This is what my spare garage with my 200sx in looks like right now:
Sweet!
and proof i do actually work as all my mates/few on here say im a lazy shit and just supervise :

Nice project, rob is one of my best m8's in my car world and does know his stuff, he's not shy in trying something new and if he's told it won't fit he makes it fit lol
not sure about the forest arches tho, don't do it, wouldn't have thought it would need them.

i dont really want to mess anything up with the Ford side of things and just think something old school and Ford competing with all the jap/bmws would be awsome...
Im breaking the 200sx sadly, it was my restoration project but i had a break in and that has come to make me decide to sell up rather the store..

Top work mate! 24vs are awesome engines and people have only just started to realise this now, its getting very hard to find granada 24vs for a decent enough price to warrent breaking at the moment. If you need help with the 24v side of things have a look on fordsierraclub.co.uk and poweredbyford.co.uk, theres a couple of guys on the site who convert BOA looms to suit sierra's for £150 fitted, so i'm sure they'll be able to help advise or carry out the work for you at a very small cost.

Always willing to help out
Suprised how well the xr went when it was almost standard with the 24V in. Sad that the practice is all knocked on the head.
Think my 24V is going not sure what to do. Zetec? But i like the sound of a V8 (lexus?)
Also got a Saff to kit out with a motor, use the 24V BOB or Pinto turbo? Oh the choises to make
Is the SX getting broke for bits? May be after a rear axle.

Rob,
Yes s13 is for breaking....most parts still here..
Im going to be building this up to BDC spec and was hoping to catch you with a couple of minuites to spare for a chat about a few things to see if you could/would for the goods in return, dont think i can afford National Day anymore due to building on this car so ill end up pming you on some forum or text lol...
Why not got st170 engine with a turbo...heard they are light and have nice figures with abit of boost ...
I will not be getting rid of my 24v unless i seriously start competing in the likes of JDM Allstars/EDC/Prodrift....but even then i will still try and find a way to keep it lol...

Good project!
Now get a welded diff in there, Ford LSDs are crap for the drift! Don't lock up predictably or enough most of the time....
No reason why not to stick with the 24v, I will be too on my Capri and I'm going to eventually compete. Turbo kit will be on my 'to do' list as well....
You on www.trampdrift.co.uk ?

Haha, Nah im pretty historic on driftworks...been on since i was about 12-13 iirc, under other names back then but definatly been there a while, same with trampdrift been there since about 07 maybe earlier...not long after it started either way...
There is a whole new list of plans as you can see now to what ive mentioned on Trampdrift etc where i mainly see you posting...i decided to bite the buillet and go all out and get it sorted!
Im going to get some paint for my spray gun soon then im going to prep my cage and stuff myself....ive sprayed a couple of cars/vans/jet skiis already, aint the best but i cover the surface and looks Ok imo.....but again "Function Oover Form" comes to mind
Ill shoot up a few pics soonish

Bought myself a Shot blaster (Cheap one) so will see how good that shit is and if ok i will shot blast all my parts ready for paint, much quicker then doing it all by hand ......Also a Powdercoater machine is in order!...so will start doing my own powdercoating and maybe a little work for other people

My Old photobucket has decided to rape me and i cant be bothered to go back through and re upload 500+ pictures so ill start again...
Ok,
I got these is the post the other day...start with boring stuff eh..
Then today i went and got these from a guy local who has also got a 25+ car garage for me for cheapness:
They need a little chopping as ive said already but thats perfectly understandable due to them being mk2 escort arches....they fit pretty sweet with no mods just a little long etc as you can see

Hi all,
Sadly time hasnt been spent much with the 4i but more so with the japshite that i no longer own wooohooo....so now that is gone im only waiting for a cheque of £3000 to arrive so then i can purchase my wheels.....
All i have really done is:
Find my cossie 4pots, clean then up and fully refurb/rebuild them, just dont know which colour to do them as of yet, probally same colour as engine....but thats all ive done. i need some 3door hubs tho as these calipers wont fit the 4i hubs sadly
its away to body soon for:
Sills -Inner and outer
Rollcage fitted fully + made from a 6 point into a 12 point
Arches fitted
Full respray
Then im leaving the turbo for a while whilst i get out on track and just have some fun and get used to the car a little before i think of extra power....
Sorry about no progress but im sure there will be some pretty soon!

hi there cozzybigfin!
just love the idea to get more fords into the drift scene.
i saw a few and its my goal here in hungary too.
we have a team, named driftgarage (driftgarage.hu) and we have sierras and escort cosworth RWD, sierras and escort mk1 24v powered and not to mention, we have the 2009 amateur series champion, a black sapphire 24v!
also writing a blog, showing the projects and the news about us.
driftgarage.blog.hu
use some translator(google) and see the pix, it can help you modifiing the steering angle, spacing the rear suspension to get more grip or finding cheap solutions or managing things that mostly cannot find anywhere else, because some said here, sierras just aren't for drifting... :P

Hi there Leslie,
I have seen a few of you guys roaming the Driftworks forum ...
Your Fords are pretty badass over there, specially the mk1 sierra ive seen, ive kinda went off how he went on getting more lock in the sierra and added my own little thing to it for a little extra then what he has too....i have acheived around 20-25% more lock then ive seen on the sierra, i will tell people how to do it when i get the car on track and test it fully to myself
Corey
