Martoons RS500 4x4 rebuild, The black sheep!! Lol!

to be honest i feel for both parties, its not a good situation for either to be in, martin would obviously want the car redone to the standard he has paid for and jacko has been unlucky with some paint which wasn't directly his fault so one way or another someone is going to be out of pocket and if jacko's not in a position at the moment to take it back and time is a factor for martin, its a no win situation.

Why should they meet halfway?????
Why is any of this Martins fault?
How many hours would it take to sort out? I'm sure if Jacko did 2 hours extra at night or coming in early it would get sorted fast. I find it inconcievable he currently works to such a high capacity he cannot make an extra hour at the start and end of the day.
Gutted for you Martin, esp after you were soooooo patent.

Jacko has said he can't afford a full refund and he hasn't got time to redo it in the timescale Martin wants.
So there is clearly never going to be a solution that is satisfactory to everyone.
So I reckon a partial refund is in order and take the car somewhere else.
This is bad for Jacko financially, but on the plus side, I'm sure a weight would be lifted when he learns the car would never come back to him.
Bad also for Martoon as he'd end up having to pay for the work to be done again, but on the plus side, he'll get it done sooner and right.
It's easy to highlight to Jacko that he really should be making good as a priority to save damage to his reputation, but he's weighed that up and said he needs the current money coming in more than he needs the kudos that this car will bring. His choice.
A huge wounder all round

Ok, decision made!
I'm not going to let this situation cause me to get rid of my Sierra...
The car is not going back to Jacko's (Partial refund please!) it will be getting painted by a very fussy local guy who has decent facilities and a nice booth on site.
I'm going to assemble the running gear back into the car while I wait for my slot with the replacement painter, the guy actually wants me to map his Celica GT4 so if he does a bad job I can always advance his ignition map by 10 degrees or so

im pretty surprised taht people are just jumping down the throat of jacko because of this, what are you meant to do when a paintjob comes out bad. i think everyone in the trade who paints knows this feeling at some point or another and knows where jacko is coming from.
im not defending the finish but at least jacko is admitting its far from correct, but when you have work booked in what can you do? just tell everyone that theyre not being paid so that a customers car can be brought back in that didnt turn out right? then lose money to pay wages/materials/rent etc?
dont think so!!!
a bare metal job doesnt just take a week or 2 weeks to do here in any bodyshop to be done properly, but of course people will expect this from someone with a good rep like Jacko has. and to achieve the perfection that martin wants it would take as long as needed as far as i would be concerned until the customer and painter were happy.
martin wants perfection and it is his car, his choice where to go for the paint and quite rightly so, however people who dont know jack about paint need to realise not every job goes perfect and how one thing can ruin it.
the tags say it all, keyboard warrior syndrome ftw on this site
1 good job = 10 people get told good feedback
1 bad job = 1000 people get told bad feedback

before i sort it ill put up my end of the story
as a good deal i offered to do the car for £1500 to get my name on the car
this was bare metal all dents done paint inside out and engine bay collect and deliver
then we found it wasnt rust free so it got a fare bit of welding which was an extra £200
the first paint job was nice and flat but the paint wouldnt pollish so i did it again by this point i was allready out of poket
i asked for the paint rep to come look at it and even though it was plain to see it was down to the product they fucked me off
the car was delivered back to martin after it was all pollished and he wasnt happy with it so it was brought back this cost me
£300 to have it taken there and brought back
there was a few bits i wasnt happy with once it was back which i think other than the few edges where they had been pollished through verry slightly wasnt too bad and would have got away with just a few pannels repainting but martin asked if i could paint it again and try to make it orange peel which dosnt realy work as it cant be made equal
he then changed his mind and wanted it flat so i pollished it again
so its actualy had 3 repaints and im about 3k out of pocket
now in my defence i bought a higher priced paint than i normaly use as i was assured it was excelent and it bit me in the ass and i have never ever had problems like this before or since
note to self dont do it on the cheep any more

tbh jacko the only people who should be bothered about this is yourself and martin you shouldnt need to defend yourself in regards to it....... whatever the outcome im sure that the car will be on the road and it'll be touring europe at some point regardless.
fair play to you for telling your side, everyone loves to jump on the bandwagon without hearing both sides, and coming from the painting side as well i can see and know about these problems.... shit happens and now and then a bad job occurs, just a shame that on the internet everyone loves to jump to conclusions without knowing ins and outs of things first!

£1500 my goodness mate you really had under priced that, know just how hard and tideous a job it was by the pics on this thread.
I thought you had charged £4k..ish hence my earlier comment about partial refund, but at £1500 I would say you aint even covered your own cost.
Ignore the the negative comments made by the stupid arse licking bandwagon.
Martin knows his shit and im sure he will get it sorted, its just one of those things sadly, bit like getting a dodgy crank back from the engineer before rebuild and only finding out months down the line, when its to late...who's to blame the builder or the engineering firm.
End of the day its between you and Martin, and im sure you both have had enough of each other by now ( respectably).
Best leave it be, and hope the project keeps going and gets finished within a certain time scale and hopefully Martin aint to out of pocket at the end of it.

Bad news and shocking practice by jacko (or any other business) - admitting to doing a bad job then not commiting to put it right until a few months down the line, thats not really how a good business operates imo.
Glad to hear its being sorted, look forward to seeing it done now

i want to put it right but iv lost that much on this car allready that if i dont get some paying work through im prety much dun for so how else can i do it with out pissing of a load of the customers i have in now
look at one of my posts with the time it took to do this car and multiply the pollishing by 3 and the time to paint it the same and time it all for £30 an hour and you will see where im at at the moment
i never charge allot and i allways do it as cheep as i can so i dont have a large bank account to cover this
i dont do this to be rich just to work on the cars i love and do a good job

A hell of a bad situation for both Martin and Jacko
I feel for them both to be honest ..
Jacko tried his best to do a superb job for Martin at a good price , Im sure he did this as he is a new business and painting a car that will be well know would be good for him and help his business grow ,
Martin was willing to let jacko do it as im sure he understood the above and was happy to give jacko a chance
Now its all gone tits up it has bitten jacko in the arse big time as he has got exactly the oposite from this job , instead of good posotive responce it has now done damage to his name and to be honest its not his fault .
Im a painter by trade and know that stuff like this happens to the best of us and its just a real shitter
Now I think in all honesty Martin has been a true gent about it by only expecting a part refund , I think martin has thought about how hard it is trying to build up a reputation and start a new business and deep down i feel has a bit of sympathy for jacko knowing that paintwork can be a total bastard .
I can understand that Jacko is also in a no win situation , if he drops everything to do Martins car he then pisses of ALL his other customers to try and keep just one customer happy , this is financial and business suicide , he needs to keep his current customers happy and get some money in the bank , if Jacko had a few staff he could do both and TRY to keep everyone happy but sadly he doesnt so thats a no go
I also feel Martin understands this and this is another reson he has been sympathetic
All in all there is no perfect solution for either , Jacko has lost money and so has Martin
All i will say is that Martin could be kicking of big time and demanding this and that but he isnt , i honestly feel the soft side of Martin has shown and he is being as fair as he can
Fair play to you Martin![Clap](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/9c-clap.gif)

My cars been in storage since it was painted in september, I checked on it a month or so and it had reacted on the bonnet (very minor). I phoned my mate who had already done it mega cheap and told him about it.
He said "bring it down after New year and I'll re do it"
Been to see him yesterday and he was willing to repaint the bonnet there and then.
My cars off to get mapped at the end of the month so I asked him if he could just re do it when I get it back?
He said "yeah no bother mate just ring me before hand so I can book it in".
Thats how it should be!
Feel for Jacko I really do, but sometimes shit happens mate![Sad](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif)
I would just refund Martin a percentage of the £1500 you both agree on and move on....

before i sort it ill put up my end of the story
as a good deal i offered to do the car for £1500 to get my name on the car
this was bare metal all dents done paint inside out and engine bay collect and deliver
then we found it wasnt rust free so it got a fare bit of welding which was an extra £200
the first paint job was nice and flat but the paint wouldnt pollish so i did it again by this point i was allready out of poket
i asked for the paint rep to come look at it and even though it was plain to see it was down to the product they fucked me off
the car was delivered back to martin after it was all pollished and he wasnt happy with it so it was brought back this cost me
£300 to have it taken there and brought back
there was a few bits i wasnt happy with once it was back which i think other than the few edges where they had been pollished through verry slightly wasnt too bad and would have got away with just a few pannels repainting but martin asked if i could paint it again and try to make it orange peel which dosnt realy work as it cant be made equal
he then changed his mind and wanted it flat so i pollished it again
so its actualy had 3 repaints and im about 3k out of pocket
now in my defence i bought a higher priced paint than i normaly use as i was assured it was excelent and it bit me in the ass and i have never ever had problems like this before or since
note to self dont do it on the cheep any more

Just wanted to make clear a couple of things, none of this is meant to slag you but I want everyone to be clear that I'm not taking the piss :
* At no point did I ever ask for or indicate in any way that the job had to be done cheap and when you quoted the £1500 I was astounded. At that point if you had said that you could do a cheap job for that money or a much better job for more, I would have gone for the better option.
* You offered to collect and deliver the car inclusive in the price, this was down to you and not expected or asked for by myself. I do have a van and trailer and would have done that myself just like when I eventually collected the car.
* The bare metal work was limited to the bonnet and wings not the whole car.
* The welding done was done to a high standard and again cheaper than I expected, I was however very unhappy to find the underside of the floor was completely left in bare metal and was covered in surface rust. The day I took the car home it was hammering down with rain and there would have been no way I would have left it on my drive all night in those conditions if I had known.
* I didn't see the first paint job so can't comment on that. When the car was returned to me after the second paint job I rejected it as you mentioned BUT it really did need repainting as it really was quite bad, I can quantify 'quite bad' if you wish?
* The orange peel finish was my idea for the third time around but I decided against it after you gave some reason, this was before you painted it! Not after. The new paint finsh will be as origanal.
* Using the different paint was completely your call, I would only every experiment with new stuff on my own car. Its a bit like me trying a new brand of piston that I had never used in a customers engine build, that wouldn't happen as its not worth the risk when I already have tried and tested components already! The paint was Glasurit I recall you saying? That's a good make and should not have caused issues.
Anyhow thats my answer to your reply, I don't intend to let this run much further and ruin my thread. The car 100% is not coming back and if you feel its right to sort me out then do so, your choice, I don't really want to fall out (too much!) about this.
