after all the suspension was transfered i got all the engine swapped over aswell, once all that was done i decided i wanted the s1 kit so started looking for the kit which i finally found in the parts for sale room on here,i sorted the money out then drove down to paul ripley to collect and pay for the kit

once all the kit was cut i bonded the wheelarches on and screwed the sideskirts on

i also delocked both front doors, smoothed off the rear bumper, welded and smothed of the tailgate where the rear wiper and washer jet used to be and smoothed off the drivers wing where the ariel used to be,i didnt want to delock the tailgate as its the only way into the car if the battery ever goes flat as ive got central locking all round aswell which is on the alarm aswell

it was driven around for a few weeks looking a bit of a state i had a chat with a mate and he painted the car for me cheap,i helped with the prepping work as much as possible as i wanted to do as much as i could to the car myself and then any good comments ive had makes it feel more worth while

we got the car to my mates grandads workshop then got started

i always liked how my old erst looked in black so thought the estate would look especialy with the s1 kit so i had a word with another mate and he got hold of 5 litres of black paint for me for cheap again

a couple days later the car was all painted apart from the front bumper and bonnet as they were both knackered and i was looking for some better items

considering it was only sprayed in a garage the paint came out quite good i thought

the bumper and bonnet let it down a bit but it wasnt really for that long so didnt matter to much really

this is how it looked for a while after it was painted

then the headgasket decided to go so it came off the road for a while which turned out to be about a year and a half as i lost interest in it

while it was off the road i got hold of an efi xr3i which cost me Ł100 from a mate i was working with so i decided to go efi turbo

i thought as i was converting it to efi and was going to be changing the wiring loom i might aswell take the rest of the engine out to get the bay painted aswell

while it was off the road i also managed to find an erst bonnet with vents which cost me Ł60 so i smoothed the badge off aswell

to get it ready for the engine bay to be painted i took the loom out of both cars

as the xr3i was an efi car it also had the 90spec bumper aswell which i smoothed and modified to fit the s1 arches

i made the mouths in the front bumper a bit bigger to help with the intercooler

also added sections on on each end of the bumper so that it sat level with the s1 arches and also blended them in aswell

i also did this to the rear bumper aswell before it was painted but forgot to get any pics

as i had a spare set of mirrors i decided i wanted to modify them a bit aswell, so i cut the casings off the xr3i up and shortened them a bit

then once i had got them how i wanted them i filled and smoothed them

being as i was converting it to efi i wanted to do it so that it would be ok for tuning it maybe at a later date,i managed to find an ofac ecu which came with a superchips 195 chip which i got off here again and was only Ł150

i also managed to get a jam sport efi head off here aswell which came with a piper285t2 cam and vernier wheel and i also bought a set of beige injectors from the same person aswell

this is about my car ive got now just so people dont think that its a new project, the reason ive started it again is to make it a bit easier for me to update when ive done new things to it so that i dont have to disturb paul ripley to update my old thread

my old intercooler i had on my car was from a saab

it seemed to work ok when i had it on my car before i changed to efi so i though i would keep it on there so i made up a reverse charge carrier pipe from an old side step from a cherokee jeep

then i lost interest in it for a while again then i went away for a long weekend with a few mates to the big landrover show at billing and found a big front mount intercooler and got it for Ł250

after ford fair 2006 i got hold of some angel eye headlights

then i totally lost interest until just after xmas last year and i started working with a mate so had a lot more time to get on with a few more bits on the car,i bought some cossie fans but as they are designed to suck air through not push they wouldnt work properly

also i didnt really like the number plate in the original place as it partially covered the top mouth in the bumper so started thinking of things to do

i managed to get hold of the ofac map sensor

i had also managed to get hold of the proper act sensor but the car still wasnt running properly and i couldnt figure out what was causing the poor running and massively over fueling,i got a little fed up with it running crap so lost interest again for a while,i decided i wanted it done for ford fair last year so i could drive it to the show as i was on the passionford stand again,i also managed to get hold of a set of koni adjustable shocks aswell which cost me Ł100

i had to sort a fan out for cooling so i used the original rst unit for the time being till i sorted out something better
i also decided on a sticky number plate to go on the bonnet then about a week before ford fair 2007 i got it booked into frankenstien motorsport for a setup on the rollers,it managed 154bhp at the flywheel which i was a bit dissapointed with but it was all sorted and running properly

the crap running was due to the major sensors for the engine wernt earthed they had live going to them instead somehow they also said the low power was due to a worn engine and the pump couldnt supply enough fuel for any more boost than 11psi

i enjoyed driving the car for a while after ford fair as the car had been off the road for so long,i was at a classic car show and was looking round the auto jumble and found all this on 1 stand

i got the complete set of rear poly bushes, the rear suspension arms and trailing arms, front suspension top poly bushes (that go between the top spring cups and the body) and the nearly new spax springs all for Ł10 i had a bit of trouble getting the old trailing arms out of the rear hubs

luckily i had a spare set of rear hubs so drilled the holes out that the drum backing plates bolt to as ive got discs on the rear

by this time the engine had started smoking quite bad so a rebuild was in order as it was using a lot of oil and water aswell and i had a photoshoot for fast ford magazine sorted and was getting closer

i decided to get the engine rebuilt before my photo shoot with fast ford mag so i took the engine out

it turned out the reason it was using water was because i had a small split in 1 of the water ways in the radiator, the reason it was using a lot of oil was because the turbo oil return pipe had split aswell nevermind and while the engine was out i thought it would just be best to do the rebuild anyway,as the turbo was tired anyway i bought 1 off of billy rst

when i stripped the engine down it turned out it had been bored out by 20thou at somepoint so for the rebuild to be worth it i would have had to get new pistons, instead i used the block out of another efi xr3i im stripping so it still had the hole for the cps

i got the xr3i block bored out to take my rst pistons,i also got the crank polished aswell then started putting it all back together in my dads garage on a table

i got new big end bearings, new main bearings and new rings aswell

after i got the crank in place and bolted in place just finger tight it was getting late so went back the next day,i stated off by getting the oil pump bolted on

once that was bolted on i got the pistons back in

i also put the cam belt on and the lower cover aswell

once all that was done and the sump and other parts were all bolted back on it was time to put the engine back in

before i could bolt the turbo onto the manifold i had to make up a spacer plate

i also had to make up a plate for the turbo oil feed pipe to bolt onto the turbo

once i had made the parts for the turbo i bolted the manifold onto the head and lifted it into the bay onto the engine all in 1 piece

the reason i did it that way was so that i wasnt limited for space trying to bolt the exhaust manifold on after the head had been bolted on

i was still going over the car when jamie from fast ford turned up but wasnt much left to do

while i was finishing the car off jamie from fast ford and the photographer went off to find somewhere to take the pics, they turned up about an hour later and we set off to cts to take the pics

just so that it was actually having pics taken

i always wondered how they got those close pics where it looks like the car is moving really quick

now i know

my mate that painted the car for me needed a hand changing the engine in his nissan 180sx so gave him a hand over a couple of weekends

the week after we got the engine round to his house we were just going to get some breakfast and got into a little bit of a race well i managed to win the race but slowed down to wait for the other car then decided to have another go

this was the result

the reason the turbo had let go was due to the oil return pipe, when i rebuilt the engine and used the xr3i block i had to sort out the oil return,i drilled the block and used a banjo bolt and fitting and it was to small so couldnt let the oil return quick enough so it backed up in the pipe while the car was off the road yet again i got a few more parts from billyrst

ive also got some poly antiroll bar bushes to go on aswell

Quick Reply: erst estate going 4wd,now on the road
