Fuck that, that would have been brutal. The good thing(if that's the phrase to use) is that it would have happened so quickly the driver probably wouldn't have felt much. And the shock might have kept him unaware to a degree until the emergency services arrived.
Still, not nice. My Mum had her legs shattered when she hit a bus head on, obviously the pedals and everything were just shoved back towards her. Not a nice thing to happen at all.

LOL, you crack me right up. What could possibly be worse than having a guard rail running through the whole of your car???
Obviously in that kind of accident it doesn't matter whether you're in a Morris Marina or a Audi R8. It would have done exactly the same...
The safety structure of the Audi is unused and unscathed as the rail passed through the soft bits of the car.
