the late spec green top used in late sapphs and early escorts was used in a prototype shell which was designed on a series 2 escort i do have a pic and spec sheet somewhere it was white and a e reg i came across it when the dealership i worked for moved location and while boxing stuff i found a load of stuff like this with pics and specs and brochure's .hope this helps im off to the garage now to find the pics

You would be amazed at how many different 'mules' are made with car companies. I used to work for Ford at Dunton and have seen many strange vehicles and some pretty amazing ones from turboed KA's,V6 escort cos's the first fiesta ST's with turboed engines, also some nice astons

Seriously - a good post, it's nice to know the history of the ford prototypes, especially in the RS development.
If anyone is after a serious power 4x4 conversion, then DJM are sorting a friends Focus out with the Evo running gear - may well be worth speaking to them

Basically they're using the entire transmission (box, prop, rear diff, shafts etc.) from an Evo 8 FQ400...
They're then custom modifying it to fit by shortening bits and refabricating under the car appropriately.
He's had a custom exhaust system made and deliberately had it routed under the car away from the usual 'recess' so that can be used for the propshaft

My workshop manager done a rally school day over in Wales a few yrs ago, apaerntly the guy who owns the company has and still uses a original 4wd mk4 escort.
I cant remember if it was cossy powered but I think he said it was definately turboed.
Him and my boss have known each other for years and years and knew a few of the Boreham Staff around the RS200 era,
He could probably tell me a fair bit tbh as I have heard a few stories but nothing of much interest.
Will post back up any findings !

where is this rally school there is one 14 mile away from me was
it that one thay have a few mark 2 escorts there.

I had a quick chat with my boss today about this to see what he knew. Turns out he was a good friends with the son of one of the main guys at Boreham.
I didn't get his mates first name but surname was granger which was what he was known as, problem is that it was his stepdad who worked for Ford so no idea what his name was
Apparently grangers mum was given a prototype 4x4 escort to run round in, however my boss is convinced that this was at the time of the mk3 escorts not mk4 so I have no idea wether this was Cosworth powered or BDT powered.
The car was lent to her son one night to get to a gig he was performing at and he managed to stick it in a ditch nothing was said by Ford although he was shitting himself.
At the same time grangers stepdad was occasionally using a specced up RS200 to commute to work etc.. On one occasion my boss said that they were at a big party and grangers dad showed up in a RS200 dropping his son off, this was at the time when hardly anyone had ever seen a car like it and he took several people out for a blast round the back lanes (lucky bastards!) my boss who never had a interest in anything with less than 8 cylinders wasn't interested but now regrets turning the ride down !
Anyway he told me that after the group B cars were pulled from rallying Boreham were doing everything to shift the cars on, the huge amount of spare panels and chassis were mainly burnt from what he remembers
Grangers stepdad was apparently then headhunted by Jaguar and ended up working on the XJ220 project for them after leaving the Boreham site.
Back to Escorts
Basically its my workshop manager that done the rally day so I'll have to bug him about who and where it was that he saw this 4x4 escort.
The only other bit of info I got possibly regarding the Escorts was that a guy who runs a scrapyard in Headingham (essex?) was and still maybe does have a lot to do with 4x4 development, he had something to do with the Metro 6R4 and some other Rally projects going back as far to twin enginned minis decades ago, he was also making crankshafts for V8 Lotus race engines.
Its not proven but my boss reckoned this guy could of possibly had a lot to do with the Escort projects that Boreham built, my boss moved away from essex years ago but he lived within spitting distance of Boreham so had friends and relatives that knew people that worked there.
Not really great info there but I suppose its interesting that someones mum was lucky enough to be lent such a rare car.
If I can get anything else out of him I'll let you know
