Default Gutted and need advice from engine builders

Took head apart to change tappets today and got worried when I found this

And this

Thinking I may have to get a new pair of cams, but OH no much worse was to follow

So thats twice a sweat running engine I've bought has been less than useable (<real tears)

Can anything be done with it or is it new head time

Thinking about putting the 1.8 back in again

wounder mate.

only thing i can think of is to have the head line bored but it will cost a fortune and you will need new cams and bearing liners too

Don't panic mate... My cam bearings were worse.

After advice from both stu and Karl, I gently dressed the bearings and caps off wit 1000grit, then built them up again.

I think what Karl said was to do this, put it back together without tappets, then see if there was any play in the cam bearings. If not, then it's all good.

It's probably picked up on start-up the last time the cams had been out.

I reckon its caused by the shape of the cam bearing - it kind of wipes the oil off as the cam turns. When I rebuilt it, I filled the engine by pouring oil directly over the cams before putting the cover back on

Hmmm .. I always use anti-scuffing paste .. and gear oil at first. Looks like it might have been a bit dry at that end for a while.

if its a 4x4 the oil feed for the turbo is straight out of the gallery that feeds the lifters and starves the lifters of oil as it takes the path of least resistance i bet that is the exhaust side i would use the head again by dressing them up as karl/stu said

Ahhhh! I've heard people say that the 2wd oil feed is better, but no-one has ever explained why!

it always seems to be the exhaust side that cops it other explanation maybe the engine has run low on oil I SAY LOW not OUT as a yb can nearly hold the sump contents higher up the engine so oil becomes scarse and the furthest point cops it been the exhaust cam/turbo dip the oil and see it could have been done for ages though u never know

i bet its picked up on numbers 2 and 5 cam caps on there

mine did a similar thing, but only lightly scuffed the bearing and didn't damage it, cleaned it up with some 1200 grit and then washed it down with white spirits and all is good

just remember to put it back together wet - ie, with camlube or molygrease otherwise it'll do the same again within a few hundred miles.

yours looks like someone has removed the cams previously and either replced them dry or there has been a bit of dirt on the cap, so when replaced and started, its worked its way round

Also, the problem could be from someone putting the camcaps on backwards - IE, numbers 1 to 5 on the inlet and 6 to 10 on the exhaust, when they are supposed to be 1-5 on the exhaust and 6-10 on the inlet, with 1 and 6 been the roller bearing caps at the front of the engine

alternatively, as a modification, you could use a lathe and add an oil groove to the cam where the bearings sit - a bit like the inlet cam.

altho, according to the cosworth techy book, "due to the design of the cam bearings and cams, and the positioning of the lubricator on the exhaust cam, an oil groove is not required"

obviously it might be required to stop the caps and cam chewing themselves senceless

Well I've cleaned up the head and cap, tried cam back in and its loose as hell, tried inlet cam in its place and its fine, then I put exhaust cam in inlet side and its loose as hell so I'm going to replace the cams and keep everything crossed
