anyone have any experience with these mainly 1.8 petrol or 2.2 diesel, bad points what to look for etc, as missus wants one as her next car
The C180 is a boring old barge and very slow. They also have horrible gearboxes and are crap on fuel. The diesel is a lot better and capable of some massive mileage if you want to keep it for a long time, but again it's not great to drive. Personally I would have a BMW instead.
Aj
I have had a lot to do with mercs , I would say defo a diesel ,
They are very powerful and very very reliable , good on fuel and nothing serious goes wrong with them ,
I have a, bmw 528i as a everyday car , but would swap it 2moro for a E320 cdi , THEY GO LIKE FOOK
good luck mate

The old man loves these
he's got quite a few scattered about the south if you want something in particular
The early ones, L reg etc. are terrific value for money now and the later spec, newer shape ones are cracking cars, especially the 220cdi
the early c180 isn't great on fuel but they're pretty bomb proof although the build quality on some of them isn't what you'd expect [alot of them are now built under license FOR mercedes, not directly by them
], but then you're paying mondeo money now
personally, value for money wise, the best is a N/P/R reg c250 diesel
make sure its the elegance derivative or the avantgarde iof you can find one

i work for mercedes dealer ,diesel is your best bet i prefer cdi 270 which goes quite well look out for knocking roll bar links and roll bar bushes ,rear diff leaks, transmission leaks .
also air mass faults and blocked cats.
obviously working on them you only see the faults but if you can afford it go for an e-class cdi 320

We have a huge variation of the C class models here at work, and the general concensus is as has been said above, defo go for the Diesel models.
The new C class Coupe is far superior to the earlier model, build quality has improved and the interior now feels like a Merc. The Saloon and Estate models are also a good, solid car............ but a C class will always be the poor mans rich car, the E class is what you want
