I have had a lot to do with mercs , I would say defo a diesel ,
They are very powerful and very very reliable , good on fuel and nothing serious goes wrong with them ,
I have a, bmw 528i as a everyday car , but would swap it 2moro for a E320 cdi , THEY GO LIKE FOOK
