Interesting thread and subject I think we all knew they would go up, but not by this much in general 80s fords, this 500 is worth the dollar.
There is a lot of very wealthy people today and 100k is pocket change, colour, mileage..just perfect for one of the people. I would have thought someone like JK would of bought it.
Would I buy it.... If I had a lit of money yes, nice to dream.
I chose my xr2 to do because 7 years ago it was affordable, now there not, and a time when you got nothing to scrap them, this is a cross the classic ford scene.
On a plus, shows they are appreciated.
That 500 is stunning tho

Yeah I stumbled across it around 8-9 years ago at joe macari's work shop where I was dropping of a Ferrari interior that we had just retrimmed, it had just entered the country and was on the ramps being serviced/looked at, I remember it looking so out of place in a sea of ferraris lol but I was all over it, joe could see I was interested, he said if you like it I'll do you a deal.... Done!
I had the car transported back from London to Surrey by a firm I'd used for years(http://www.virginiawatermotorco.co.uk) as I didn't fancy driving it out of London in case it got damaged, followed etc.
The now wife and I went for a few pub lunches in it and every where it went everyone was all over it from all ages (as most cossies owners will know) the standard remark was "my mate had one of these's".....weather they meant xr4i,3dr cos or 500 I'll never know but it was nice having conversations with random people in random places about cars and the "old times"
I took it down to the 20th RS 500 anniversary at silverstone where at 5am down the A40 I can confirm it still can do as intended

I also had( still have)a FRS MK1 which I was playing with at the time so the 500 just sat in the garage
, then got married, done a bit of travelling and done the house up, I did think about selling it and buying a big bhp 3 dr but couldn't do it....
Then we had our first baby and started to look at a larger home, I didn't need the money from the 500 to do so BUT in all honesty the car was a burden.... By that time the value had gone up massively and your stuck with looking after a car rather then driving it, bear in mind it's on original tyres,as it left the showroom, sub 6k miles......the car in a way had outgrown me and felt it would be better in a collectors hands.
So sold it to a "collector" and a year later it's all over the net...
The car is as original time warp car, smell like new, has the original stickers on the wish bones, even has the origin wax oil runs in door shuts etc.
And yes I wish I never sold it!

In 1995 I had the chance of a one owner from new white 500, it had done 8000 miles in the first 6 months of its life, then went to the South of France with its owner and was parked up in his lovely dry garage, never to be used again. It was even still on its British export plates! I hesitated about putting down a deposit until I could get to Lyon a week or so later to give it a once over, booked my flight and it was sold to Germany a few days before I flew out, for under £15k :-(

A Race car dealer in central France was selling it for him in 95, he just saw it as an old Sierra! It was bought by the guy that ran the RS owners club in Germany from what I understand and then Mark Bailey bought it a few years back and brought it home to the UK, since been sold again I believe and has about 13K miles on it now.
I did find out the build number at the time and have some pics of the car and the pink export V5 and its reg no somewhere, if I can find them I will post them up.

The original owner was an ex race driver and ran the Mclaren F1 Le Mans team and lived on the Isle of White when he bought the 500 new. He did not pay VAT on the car so it had to leave the UK after 6 months on its temporary reg plate, so he took it to his home in France and never used it again or registered it over there. This was before the European Union opened the free borders.

I have only ever seen one photo from years ago of the as new, never registered white 500. Still with the same first owner was the last I heard, I believe he has been made lots of offers over the years but did not want to sell, maybe he has now changed his mind. Paul and Daz know who he is.
