Default No free road tax for 25 year old cars.

The petition to get cars over 25 years old to be exempt from road tax unfortunately has not been successful so we will still be paying for our classic Fords.

comes as no surprise as the government like taking money off the motorist, and then pissing it up the wall as roads are still in shocking sub standard condition all over the uk

Got the same email this morning.
It should be exempt from a certain year then as every year passes the exemption moves on a year.
Makes sense really.

Only 2 weeks ago I had to get a new front strut and spring on my Renault Laguna as mine got broken by potholes! As you say the state of our roads is terrible. I was watching a tv programme last night and there was an RAC breakdown guy called out to a lady who had gone down a huge pothole and wrecked her wheel and tyre. While he was fixing her there were 4 more vehicles all went down the same one and all wrecked wheels and tyres!!! He went down the road and put some cones in it so nobody else would do the same thing.I hope all the people claimed for their damage!!

It is and has been for a few years . Unfortunately it's set at 40 years and not 25 . On the plus side only 2 years to go for my RS2000 and 6 years for my 2.8 Capri

Was never going to happen really was it?

It's slanted towards giving new cars tax reductions as it's based on emissions ratings above anything else.

Currently Ł225/yr for mine, on the positive side only 30 more years to go

How can some cars get free road tax? Just cause the emissions are squeaky clean.

They still use the roads like any other car.

Was always my argument, the counter argument to this is they make up for it with taxation of fuel.

Still think it would be fairer if it was based on mileage as I know plenty of folk with multiple cars and many of them are hardly used but they still have to tax them.

Got the stupid long winded email too this morning which basically just said no..

Because it's not road tax, it's Vehicle Excise Duty

The roads are paid for by council tax and central government coffers, not 'road tax'

Since when?

Tax free is registered before 1975, so if a car isn't tax free it can't become tax free?

Just found it, must have passed me by, cool http://www.historicvehicles.org.uk/hvg3.php

Just abolish road tax all together and stick it on the price of fuel. Those who do more miles and who drive thirstier cars get taxed more than those who piddle to the shops once a week in an old micra. Sorted.

It is yes I agree. However it doesn't pay for road repairs. You have to pay tax just for privilege of using the roads that's what Dvla told me. Local Council and highways agency are responsible for road repairs. Dvla bloke I spoke to was right arrogant arsehole! I told him he needs to pay me Ł250 per year to breathe the air in, to which he replied you don't own the fuckin air, an I then said and you don't own the fuckin roads!
Soon shut him up. Road tax should be abolished full stop as you get fuckall for it, it is was it states TAX ! More money for government

Just been reading the proposed changes for VED starting in 2017 where they will be basically hammering new car owners of Ł40k+ vehicles for the first 5 years but then an standard Ł140 after then making older vehicles more appealing to those on a budget.

There's no such thing as road tax....it's a tax related to the vehicle, people call it 'road tax' but if you notice all government papers .gov websites and any other official stuff refer to it as car tax, vehicle tax or VED

It's a tax on the car not the road that perfectly explains Glenn's question about why some get it free, because they have clean cars

Hope that helps

Free to what they currently class as clean cars, all based on carbon dioxide emissions.

No doubt this will change at some point to phase out diesel cars which everyone has bought because of their lower carbon dioxide emissions but produce other nasties

Would suit me down to the ground having a few vehicles which do a couple of thousand miles per year. Sure I'd pay more for my daily, but I'd be quids in accross the board and no paperwork!

Problem was they made an emissions target and incentivised it and by 2017 most new cars will meet it resulting in a los of income for the governement so they need to rearrange it and they cant be seen to tax poor people (many of whom still seem to manage to own new cars, go figure) hence the new system.

Likewise, the 25 year tax free thing was fine when it was introduced and we were talking about 1970 cars which have been looked after and are used for shows and stuff, but now 25 years old is 1991, which means its not a few very old but well maintained cars, its a huge number of old cheap smokers and they want to incentivise keeping our car history alive, museum style, not drive up the price of old smokers for students to run about in.
