Default Picking a tow car?

Looking for a tow car for somebody with a budget of £2,000.
I personally feel that looking for something with more than 4 cylinders would be beneficial as you always have an overlap between power strokes but my Missus is telling me to stop being so stupid and to just look at torque.

I thought something like a 320i or a Volvo with 5 pot lump would make a better tow car than a 1.8TDCi Focus.

Anyone on here done any real towing with day to day cars?

Bailes.

Depends what your towing, everyone says diesel, yet bigger petrols are more than capable if you can live with the day to day running costs.

W210 e320 cdi can be picked up for a grand cracking tow cars

I have a newer w211 E320 cdi with a remap and one of the best cars i have used to tow with but all depends on what you are after anything a decent size with a decent engine will be good enough for the occasional bit of towing.

Pointless answering without knowing what your trying to tow, the focus would be perfectly acceptable for a small trailer but totally inadequate for towing a 4x4 on a car transporter through a muddy field .

Then you'll have to take into account license entitlements due to the weight

Mk3 Mondeo would be more than adequate, it will all depend on your licence though. I have B+E which I got through my time in the RAF, covers me for pretty much everything up to 3.5 tonnes. Great towing car (mine was a 2.5 V6 auto, bloody thirsty!) but I did get pulled over and weighed regularly so don't take chances as they are cracking down!

i have a mk3 mondeo TDDi, it spends half its life with a car trailer on it, i know i shouldn't but i had a ford galaxy on the trailer a few weeks back and it pulled it no trouble ( trailer and galaxy must have grossed 2300kg), mondeo has a 1800kg tow max and will tow that with ease, doesn't real even notice hills with 1800kg on the back, ford galaxy's make good tow vehicles as well, and have space in the vehicle for extras, thinking of getting a galaxy to replace mondeo,
