Default Mercedes C180 idle problems- anyone got an idea?

My lad's just boutght a 1996 C180 as a cheap runabout while he takes his Focus RS off the road to do some work on it.

The Merc idels poorly and keeps cutting out if you pull up sharply whilst driving.

I've done a bit of digging and the finger of suspicion is pointing at the thrittle body being clagged up, or a faulty idel activation switch?

Anyone got any other ideas?

It's just had new plugs, air and fuel filter and an oil change. It had been sitting for a year before he bought it.

Throttle body is common fault on the c180 also check the insulation on the May engine loom as that year rage Merck used biodegradebl looms witch was well smart

clean the throttle with carb cleaner if you take it off and hold it up to the light i bet you cant se daylight round the edge of the throttle body due to the crud! you may or may not have to reprogramme the throttle afterwards on star data or a suitable snap on scanner allthough if you disconnect the battery before removing you may get away with it, or if its cable operated you should be good anyway

its cable operated so hopefully giving it a good bath in carb cleaner will do the trick
