Default Legal question (connected with cars)

We've got a person who has moved to UK (Polish -> EU citizen), the person has a car registered in Poland and was told that he has to re register it to UK plates. Is that true and why? If so how long can he drive in UK on Polish plates? Anybody? Thanks a lot for input

Because one can earn 10 times as much in UK?

EDIT:
For quite many people it is a difference between earning and not earning at all.

you have to change, but i don't know the time limit. i believe that it's as soon as possible kinda thing.

the reason for it is is so that the owner can be traced for payment of various taxes, fines etc, be traced for any accidents/criminal activity, that the car is roadworthy (with all that includes such as small things like direction of headlight beams).

it makes sense for the authorities to want it to happen, and for the opposite of the very same reasons it makes sense for the individual not to. it's very nice to have a foreign registered car and not have to cough up for speeding fines or road tax, although it's not fair.

You have to have it taxed/insured/mot'd somewhere.

If they keep taking it back to poland to do that then bringing it back over then they wont need it on UK plates, if they want a UK MOT on it though they will need UK plates.

You dont need UK plates to have an MOT, i run my imported Grale for 2-3 months on german plates no problem.

It was MOT'd and insured on the Vin number without any issues, i think there is a limit of around a year but i'm unsure.
Its doubtful you would ever be questioned and if you did just register it here, its very easy to do.

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/exptimpt.htm#Exports
Temporarily Imported Vehicles
There are International agreements which provide for the temporary use of a vehicle in a foreign country for a limited time, usually 6 months in a 12 month period. A visitor to the UK may use a vehicle displaying foreign plates, provided that all taxes (including vehicle excise duty) are paid in their country of origin.

We had a situation recently with one of our cars where the driver moved across the border from Northern Ireland to live in the Irish Republic. He didn't tell us about it until the Garda threatened to impound the car and fine him 3900 euros.
