Default Should lots of previous owner put you off buying a car??

Hi all just joined the forum tonight.

I have always liked the Rs mk2, nearly purchased one about 2 years ago from a dealer, ended up deciding against it for various reasons, mainly money!

Never really thought about it since. That was until yesterday, a guy I work with is selling his RS, he is needing cash quickly and offered the car to me yesterday out of the blue for about 1k under book value.

Ive been in the car it is in mint condition there is nothing needing doing to it. All is in order, service history ect.. The only thing putting me off the car is if I buy it I will be the sixth owner!!

Now I will be moving to Australia in 8 months time with my job. This is set in stone.. So in about 6 months time I will be looking to sell the car myself. Do you guys think this will hinder the sale or value of the car? Because I am thinking that i might be able to sell the car on in six months time for the same money i bought it for as they seem to be holding there value very well. or is this a pipe dream?

Thanks in advance.

It can effect value for sure as the purist will always want a 1 keeper car etc, but that by no means is something to put a real enthusiast off as there could be many genuine reasons for a high turnover of owners, just do all the usual common sense checks, if something seems wrong with car/history etc walk away as plenty of others out there

The fact that it 1k less than what you think its worth probably allows you the movement anyway.

6 owners in how many years?

I had a saff with 14 previous owners.

I think condition service history mileage etc is way moe important.

I wouldn't be as bothered about it with a car like this as due to high running costs etc people tend not to keep them for long. If it was a normal focus then I might start worrying.

I'm never personally bothered by too many owners on a car, but I do get concerned when I think about the re-sale. When I've sold cars people always ask how many owners has it had so yes, it will definitely hinder re-sale.

Saying that, my old Cossie had 21 owners

If you're only going to have it for 6 months max why bother? If you end up struggling to sell it when you're trying to move it'll just become a millstone.

I agree, if your getting it 1k under then, what did you base your reference value on, despite only being made for a short period of time the mk2 ra has values for Ł17-25k depending upon age mileage and condition. I would call the guys at Rs direct and see what they think the value of the car would be to give you a gauge as to what it might be worth in 6 months time

I don't even look, just go on mileage condition and history, receipts not stamps.
Performance cars change hands much quicker as we get bored/ fancy trying something else etc, my last cossie I bought twice and also put it in my girlfriends name so that was 3 owners and was always mine.

Thanks for the replies, has been good hearing peoples thoughts on the matter!!

Checked the car out today, took it for a drive it's immaculate, hpi clear as well.

When checking out the receipts and history. It's only has 3 stamps in the book!! He had told me it had a full service history!

Its not had a service coming up for 2 years, its only done 9k in that time, so in my book it doesn't have a full service history. He argued because it has not covered 12.5k miles in that time it does..

This has thrown another spanner into the works.. Not sure what to do, as it is a lovely car..

Loads of owners wouldn't put me off an older car but if the car was say 2 years old and it had had 4 owners I would want to know why.

The service book clearly states 12,500 miles or 12 months, which ever comes first. Lack of service history certainly would detract potential buyers when you come to shift it.

Personally I would probably walk away.
