Carbon build up can cause issues if they are just driven round and round town, doubt you'll have any tells but if there are any lights on the dash or loss/lack of power then don't listen to any sellers billy bullshit.
140bhp is meant to be better than the 170bhp for reliability so I have heard but guess a lot comes down to how they are treated.
My sister has one and they are a nice car to drive and are aging well.

i had an 07 140 bhp and suffered all the common faults ![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
Clutch slave cylinder failed which needed new DMF flywheel and clutch which was £1k fix at VW - to be fair could have saved a bit using a generic flywheel from GSF but it was in the garage and I was busy at work
The throttle body gets gunked up with oil which makes the actuator work harder than it should, and it blows. Due to some brilliant german engineering it is on the same circuit as the cooling fan so takes this out at the same time. A generic throttle body was about £250 from memory.
I joined a service club with my local franchised VW dealer and signed up for a direct debit each month which covered all servicing and MOT's and was significantly cheaper as they knew they had your business. It also gave discount on parts and labour so if you have the chance to do that I'd recommend it.
Overall it was a good car that was great on fuel, could park it anywhere without worrying but still turn up to restaurants or client site and be plenty smart enough. Would recommend.

The Mk5 Golf is very much engineered to a price. This is the point on the Golf timeline that VW decided to trade on their 'superior reliability' tag rather than actually produce well engineered reliable cars. A lot more faults than the Mk4 which is a far superior car in terms of reliability. I would avoid the early 2.0 diesel engines if possible, they are not the best. The 1.9pd unit however is good for 200,000 miles if maintained correctly. Petrol's are as good as anything else on the market, if not spectacular. Good cars still command strong money for what they are, especially the GTI models compared to an ST for example. I have been a staunch VW man for many years but your money could potentially be better spent elsewhere. Good luck with your search.
