24V Cosworth emerlad ECU starting problem
Hi All,
I am having a problem getting my 24V Cosworth engine started on Emerald K6 management and hoping someone can help me before I do my nut in.The Ecu seams to be doing everything is suppose too apart from starting the engine.
When the engine is cranking over I am getting a lot of banging, popping, engine lock and backfiring which is making me think is a massive timing misalignment within the base map??.
I think the problem is in the timing settings, although this is Emeralds base map. The BTDC (before top dead centre) reference point is set at 65 degs, which in my opinion is massive and I though these engine using the standard Crank Position Sensor ran somewhere between 12.5 & 22 degs BTDC.
Has anyone had a similar problem to this or has anyone got any other suggestions where I am going wrong?

The engine is a fully rebuild engine so its only ever ran on the dyno and all was ok
I have all test gear above and a timing light. so I think I need to do some more investigation with the Noid lights and timing light to see if everything is set up, any idea on BTDC degs of a 24V cosworth

I don't think it will matter if I am honest the emerald acts on the same manner , or so I have been told. I'll give it ago and see what happens, it has to be a timing issue and the whole ignition map is based on the btdc deg ref , so if that is wrong the whole timing will be adrift. Doing my head in

Trigger reference, missing tooth, whatever you want to call it is not ignition timing which your 12 or 22 sounds more like.
If the 36-1 is OEM, and you are getting a good stable rpm reading when cranking, and the base map is configured correctly...
Sounds like you've the coils or leads wired wrong.

Check which way round the coil pack is wired up. I had a swine of a job getting mine to run on first start up when the Emerald was first on to my engine.
After lots of checking everything over for something amiss, it was 2 coil trigger wires needed swapping over
Was the dyno run done with the same ECU and wiring loom?

I have been on the phone today with Emerald today and they said the timing in the map cant be wrong.
they also said the same thing about the coil wires from the ECU maybe mixed up i.e. driver 1 wire from the ECU wired to driver 3 of the coil pack, makes sense.
I have already carried out a conductivity test of the wire all was good, but I didn't check which cylinder was sparking . so ill have to check that, if it still doesn't work I think ill be shipped off to the funny farm.
