Default Testing a turbo

I have a turbo been sat for a long time I got it off ebay. There is very minimal play in it.I was thinking of testing it by some how blocking the oil return off and filling the turbo up with oil through the oil feed and blanking it off and putting by drill on the end of the turbine and propelling it to see if there are any leaks. Its a variable speed drill. The turbo wont lose oil as it will be full with both ends capped of so nothing gets out.I no the idea sounds mad but I carnt think of another way of testing it unless I install it which is a pain in the arse especially if it is screwed.Unless any one else has any ideas lol

Oil is at pressure don't forget so can force it's way past the seals!

You're highly unlikely to see any oil leaking through the seals unless it's under pressure.

Just take it to a turbo specialist and get them to check it over.

oil at the seals should have minimal pressure, the drain is large enough for this to be normal.
fill it with oil, spin the shaft by hand and feel for play.
you could block the drain and blow in the oil inlet, listen for leaks when filled with oil.
otherwise get it tested by a professional.

I thought there had to be something even if it was minimal.

It looks like its had a rebuild at some point. The actuator looks new and when I removed the oil return the gasket looked new and the body that it was screwed to looked polished. It also has a turbo technics badge on it is that something they all come with?

turbo technics badge could be manufacturer/specifier/supplier most have them on fords to be fair.
there can be a little up/down play due to no oil in bearings, but no in/out.
clean or not, if the main shaft has been dry and not oiled and there is a hint of rust where it meets the dry bearing it can fail quickly.
best to inspect really and get it spinning with oil down it's neck.

some of the gt series turbo's have a little in out play in them when they have been drained of oil a while but on any other turbo in out play is a no no regardless of how little there is
