MSD Blackpool.
Hi everyone , I have just come back from a trip up to Blackpool to take my 2wd Sapphire Cosworth to MSD to get them to sort out some low speed rough running after having a lot of modifications done by Malcolm and Richard at Tremona Garage in Southampton. The modifications included a hydraulic clutch conversion ( best thing ever ) lightened flywheel, new 6 paddle clutch, new engine loom ( by bespoke looms, top quality ) new Bosch 044 fuel pump, A&S new hart style inlet plenum, Siemens 83lb injectors, new T38 turbo from CR turbos with billet commpresor wheel and new turbo damper, wasted spark ignition system and L8 ecu. The engine already had the 200 wire rung block, balanced bottom end, low comp pocketed pistons, group A spec cylinder head, Bd 10 & Bd 12 cams etc. The guys at Tremona Garage did a lot of hard work to get everything fitted properly as a lot of things were not just bolt straight on ! The new off the shelf MSD chip that I got was fine to get the engine up and running but was not as it should be. This is why even though it is a fair way to go the trip to MSD was needed. I have to say how impressed I was with the new rolling road they have now got and very impressed with the re-map they carried out. They extracted an extra 40BHP, eliminated the low down rough running and have transformed the car into a beast!! The acceleration and power is fantastic now and I am having to get used to handling the dry road power slides!! Their expertise is superb and I would say to anyone with a Cosworth it is well worth the trip to Blackpool if you want to get the best out of your engine. Richard from Southampton.

Cossie power
Hi Steve, I dont know what it made at the wheels it was 422 bhp at the flywheel. The figure is not that important to me , its how the car drives now . It has always been a fast car, but it is in another league now!! It has become a beast with fierce acceleration and massive power. As soon as you get into second and plant your foot down it gets massive wheelspin and power slides away !! It just pulls and pulls with no turbo lag. I love it and track days are on the agenda for next year. I have already got a set of track day tyres for it!
The other end of the scale is how smooth it is now at low speeds. Cheers Richard Green.

I've also been to MSD with my saph 4x4 twice this year had various things done from wasted spark, new wiring loom, fuel pump, fuel pump loom, fuel pressure reg, sorted out starting probs, new chip & set up on the rollers, like Richard said these guys know there stuff
I wouldn't go anywhere else & can't recommend them enough....

glad you're happy with it though

We usually do supply wheel power, and I still can should the customer want a copy. Every run is recorded and kept on our data base forever.
In this case though the car wasnt really here for any power increases, the customer was already happy with performance, so we didnt push things as far as we could. Im sure should the customer want more power in the future we could push things on a little,
it was in for a fix on low down drivability, i just happened to use the dyno to rectify the issue. The graphs printed were mainly to show AFR against boost.

I don't see the issue with using flywheel figures all car manufacturers do as do engine dynos and dd dynos aren't exactly generous.
the silliness comes from wheel measured power correction factors used on hub figures imo.
msd dyno is well set up so the fugures will be close enough without getting all f1 about it

Power figures
Why are the figures so important ? If you came for a ride in my car and I let you guess at the BHP I can guarantee you would say a lot higher than 422 at the flywheel!! It drives like an animal and I can say with no bullshit I have had a race with a 2012 twin turbo Porsche 911 540 bhp and it really struggled to match the acceleration of my car. The owner was shocked and said he was really trying and could not believe how quick it was! It is really struggling for grip now so I think it is just about spot on. If it had a lot more power it would be almost undriveable in the lower gears ! Cheers Richard.

I cruised up there from southend one early morning in the saph which was dying for improvement , arrived at 9.30 all setup & stg1 by about 3pm iirc and cruised back with a big smile all the way home . Brilliant service and didnt cost the world like some assume with these cars.

Or perhaps he is a fellow petrol head who likes to see a car like a Cosworth being used, and knows how well a tuned car can go?

msd they had a cossie somebody named john lawley or somthing his car blew up i think on there dyno first pj done something then it whent to msd for afters lol not putting msd in the bad reputation or anything just currous thats all?

Putting your car on a dyno is totally at customers risk. Anything can fail and if its mechanical its just bad luck.
But even if its down to fuel a engine that's been detonating for a while will be more prone to putting a hole in a piston even if the fuelling has been checked along with det.
Things go wrong its the nature of the game.

as awesome as that would be (and I would love one) the reality is it will need a skyline gearbox and diffs to be anywhere near reliable and used hard, with that in mind its a lot cheaper and easier to just buy a gtr.
my r33 was only £15500 640 hp and can use it all put it down and nothing has broken yet (touches wood) lol
I would love an escos its just the cost that puts me off if trying to run nig power and make it reliable
