new one on me today.
I got finished this years harvest Thursday afternoon, so got the r33 out today for a play.
anyway driving about and felt a vibration from the gearbox and then battery light came on and voltage down to 12v and lost power steering.
so cruised home only about 1.5 miles away, opened the bonnet and with the engine running the bottom pulley isn't turning !
I shall get it on the ramp Monday and pull the rad out and see whats happened, ive been informed they have been known to slip on the laminated rubber in the pulley but id of thought it would still turn slightly ?
has anyone ever had this before as its a new one on me ?
the pulley looks to be still in the correct position it doesn't look like its hanging one way or moved/twisted at all ?
its recently had a cambelt aswell.

If the bottom pulley bolt wasn't tight it wouldn't still be running, surely the cam timing would slip, twat the valves etc.
Slipping vibration damper seems more feasible.
If it is the bolt loose, you've been fuckin' lucky!

i would imagine it's probably the rubber in the pulley that's failed and allowed the outer to be turning seperatly to the inner, as in the inside that's keyed onto the crank is still turning but the outer bit after the rubber isn't
if it was any other way i'd imagine this thread would have been "fucked my engine when the woodruft key slipped" etc

the supra had the front bolt loose when it failed but it also only had 20 psi of oil pressure due to a majorly failed conrod lol.
I will know more Monday once the rads out and I get my head in there, ive been looking and I can get a fluiddamper if it is just the rubber failed on the stock damper.
the engine runs perfect I wouldn't have known except it stopped charging and I felt a slight vibration from the gearbox.

Is the damper keyed on ?
If so....not good unless you're lucky enough for it just to be a rubber failure in the damper.
If the damper has spun on the crank, it really isnt good.

well its been bugging me all night so ive just been out and had a look.
im no small bloke so was a struggle but I managed to ran my right arm in there and get the tip of my finger inside the pulley touching the inner flange where the bolt is, when I spin the pulley the centre part isn't turning so it looks as though the rubber has screwed out and the bolt and damper centre are still attached tight to the crank.
it is proper fucked aswell as I can wiggle it about a lot and I can feel burrs hanging out the front where its twisted off, no wonder I felt a vibration it must of been wobbling about like an egg spinning, shouldnt of done to much damage though as I felt it and backed of to cruise straight away and oil pressure was still a consistent 80 psi.
the idle has been abit up and down a little the last few times ive used it maybe where the damper was starting to fail, im looking at fluidampr dampers as a replacement as im running 8500 rpm regularly and propbably abit much for the stock damper to cope with.

if it is then lucky lucky that its not done some major damage inside.
out of interest who did the belt swap and did they say what was replaced as I know on audi s2's they recommend changing the damper with the belt.

fingers crossed its ok I felt the vibration and backed of instantly then a couple ofr seconds later the alt light came on once the pulley had completely sheared and the alt, ps pump and water pump stopped spinning. the engine just hit 101 c once I got home and turned it off hopefully not done any damage.

I pondered on having an uprated pulley at the time wish id done it now lol.
your right jay with a egg shaped pulley swinging as the rubber was tearing away will affect the flywheel and cause a vibration.
I restarted the car when I got home and it even starts and idles ok, I also had absolutely no drop in oil pressure to show and signs of change of bearings within the motor.
im gonna get a fluidampr I think as there fit and forget self balancing and power the a/c pump at the correct speed.

tried to pull the pulley with my puller and realised the pulley hasn't failed on the rubber, its broken in 2 on the inside edge of the pulling holes !
so I had to drill some new pulling holes in the housing, I can only assume when the pulley was pulled the do the cam belt it must of hair line fractured slightly and its just taken a few hundred miles for it to shear off.

everything else looks good just pulley failure, tbf the face where the pulleys are pulled from is very thin and made of crap soft casty stuff im not surprised it broke there crap, im now trying to source a fluidampr street series damper for it.
