Default Bleeding Brakes

On my S2. Recently just put rear discs on the car and at the minute I have not dropped it back down on the rear wheels. I need to bleed the whole system as I had all the rear compensators out and stuff so will be lots of lovely air in the system.

Firstly, do I want the car on all for wheels to do this, im assuming? secondly, which order do I need to do each caliper please

Thirdly....wish me luck

Needs to be on all four wheels, start furthest away from the servo then work your way in.

remember what I said about raising the rear calipers up or they will trap air, but if u do it with them in the normal position let me know how u get on

dont lower the rear end on its wheels or bleeding is a bastard to get at and can cause mistakes. Put axel stands or blocks or ramps under the swinging arm and lower the car onto those....in affect it will be like on its rear wheels but they wont be in the way

Hi again all,

Maybe a silly question but, do I need the ignition on when doing this

Also, the resovoir was tottally empty I noticed since removing all the brake lines for the underside, I have filled it up and pumped the pedal a few times but have nothing, will it need a lot of pumps to get the fluid back round?

p.s resouvoiuris not empty again still just under max

Heeeelp!

You dont need the ignition on,and secondly you should get fluid to the rear calipers by the 25th pump of the pedal.Regards Micky

Cheers Micky,

Thought so re: ignition. I must have pumped them a good 50 by now I reckon, nada, had the bleed nipples out and checked them nothing with them tottally left out ffs! Ive been under the car to check the lines no leaks anywhere, pedal feels stiff though like the fluid is not getting round maybe? i mean not stiff like normal but certainly not "free flowing" ? although the level in the fluid resovouir has gone down a small amount

Are they still plumbed diagonally ? If so do the final bleed 1 circuit at a time.

Be very careful when the master cylinder is empty, if you push too sharp/hard on the pedal it will flip over the seal in the cylinder and then give you even more problems.

Tony, they are plumed in as standard. I cant make sense of it, master cyl is just under max bit down from where I fulled it to max. did the bleed nipple back up and thought id try the other side rear, same, fuck all, remove the bleed nipple tottally dry as a fcukin bone

What do you suggest? I knew this was gunna be a fcuking problem

Open rear right and front left, and slowly pump the pedal. If the seal has already flipped in the master cylinder you will have to unbolt it from the servo and unclip the circlip on the back to get at the inside. Correct the problem re-build and continue a bit more carefully.

Adam u will have to take the rear calipers off and rest them higher up as it sounds like air is getting trapped

OMFG! we have fluid to all areas now! WOOOOO HOOOOOOO!

I did what Tony said to release the one rear and one front, then got the back flowing nicely, same with the otherside, nothing until I released the front one and then it was there at the back....when the car is running at some point (tomorrow?)

I'll see how the pedal is, if its shite, i'll just bleed them again now I have fluid there

Oh and Paul, did it on the ground mate with the calipers still fixed in place, just front end jacked up with wheels off.

Anyone got any ideas on what I can try next, they seem to bleed up ok but still have far too much pedal travel

Is it worth me d/c the rear calipers and suppoprting them higher? will this have any effect? considering they seem to bleed ok? I wanna try a couple more things before I take it to the local garage.

Cheers

P.S is that order above correct ?

If the pedal is still travelling then there is possibly still air in the system.

Suspending them higher may help. How did you bleed them ? Pump the pedal a few times before opening up the bleed nipple on one of the down strokes. Then lock it off let the pedal come up on its own, and repeat.
