So basically, opening it up, pumping it a few times then shutting it off again when no bubbles are seen is not good enough? (def not locking it off on a down stroke, not possible to do that at the same time myself

IS this where I am going wrong?

No with the nipple closed, pump the pedal slowly a few times to compress the fluid and move the air around. Hold the pedal on a down stroke and get a mate to slowly crack open the bleed nipple. The pedal will sink to the floor as the air escapes. Lock off the bleed nipple, and then let the pedal rise up again on its own.

Repeat until no more air comes from that caliper.

You should have a tube on the bleed nipple with the other end submersed in a jar of brake fluid to stop any air coming back up into the caliper.

Gotcha.... ok so I need to open the nipple just as they begin the downstroke as u say it will go to the floor (not when it has already reached the floor? )

I have a bleed kit thing with the hose and the end submurged in a couple inches of fluid yes

Yep only open it up on the down stroke of the pedal,

Keep pressure on the pedal and when the nipple is cracked open it will sink to the floor and expel all the air.

Then lock it off, and let the pedal rise on its own. As the pedal rises it will draw fluid from the reservoir to refill the system so keep your eye on this level too.

Repeat a few times on each caliper until no more air bubbles are seen in the liquid.

Borrow a mate or family member for 30 mins and ditch the auto bleed kit

Sorry ....

you only need the bit of pipe that goes from the bleed nipple to the jar of fluid.

the rest can go in the bin

Tony, I still have ABS on my car, can you look at my thread and the bottom of page 4 and shed any more light on what Lee is talking about bleeding the ABS modules?

https://passionford.com/forum/viewto...586591#1586591

Cheers

Adam, the two ABS modules have a bleed screw on the side of them. At the top they have a plunger. Usually these are seized, they were on Roosies old Mercury grey one.

Bear with me I will confirm procedure.

Do this first before bleeding of main system.

-Top up master cylinder to max mark.
-Using Torx Key slacken the bypass valve (On site of ABS Module)
-Fully depress and hold the auto bleed plunger on module so the plunger circlip contacts body.
-Have an assistant pump the pedal at least 20 time (I find a blonde assistant does just fine) You should notice fluid returning to master cylinder. Continue until no bubbles are seen.
-Release plunger ensuring fully returned.
-Tighten bypass scre.

Now carry out main system bleed as discussed on your resto topic

Ahh, balls, that means I wont have the correct size torx, or the modules as u say will be seized. Where are these located and are they hard to get at from underneath? where should I see bubbles? u mention the master cylinder

Can do it from top mate. Its not a bad job to do. You know the pipes that come from the ABS modulators to the Master cylinder. These ones.

You know I mentioned 20 time too. Do it as many times as it needs. Also be very carefull when tightning the torx up again. I ripped the thread of Roosies one. Only Alloy.

I aint no better than you mate. Just I had a nightmare with the grey one. Stu had took off his old Cossie calipers off and all fluid had drained out. I did same as you for three days solid. 1 Gallon off brake fluid later. And 1/2 pint of blood less.

Think some one on here said. Oh Lee have you done the ABS.

PM me your addy mate and when you wanna do it. Will it need to be daylight or have you got some lighting. If not Adam now your keen, can pop over next weekend.

Lee - Can be evening mate. I have two floodlights outside the garage, a big lead light and a double garage with lights so we can do it inside or outside the garage

Evening would be best for me really, as I'm usually at the womans place or she is down at mine (im away next weekend for easter) and would prefer to get this sorted ASAP.

Lee - your brave

Dont need the engine running either - especially if your doing it in a garage (fumes).

Dont forget there are 2 modules to do. 1 is easy to see and the other is a mirror image if I remember correctly, so you need to reach round a bit and work blind. Torx is here

Maybe down again in the next few weeks or so (last down 3 weeks ago) and always stay in the Rutland as its central Maybe arrange a mini get together sometime then

Adam as i have said before i have exactly the same set up as u. And i had the same problems as u. U need to unbolt the rear calipers and hold hold them as high as u can on the disc while bleeding them. This is where the air is getting trapped as the bleed nipple is lower than the master cylinder.

Paul - I think this is probably where things are heading, this will be something to try for sure, I'll need to make sure Iput something in the calipers to stop the piston popping out if they are removed whilst doing it, lol

I'm just glad that is is more likely that they need to be bled fully / properly for the brakes to be good and it is not a problem somewhere

We'll see.

Cheers again all

Push the fluid in under pressure and release the air with it also under pressure from the pedal and you shouldn't need to lift the calipers

Dont need to lift the calipers AT ALL. Its the bottle of fluid that needs to be higher than the caliper so no air can get drawn back into the system.
