Help Needed ~ Non-Starting Cossie.
My mate has just fitted a 2wd cossie lump to his A reg XR4i.
I know, i know why you may ask? But its his baby and he's done it all himself and is a proud bugger.
Now the problem is after starting it today and adjusting the dizzy so it ticked over ok, he let it run for a bit but he's not getting any oil pressure??
He's checked the oil level and its upto the max mark on the dipstick.
Any thoughts?

as per simon, line the dizzy up within 10degrees of the mark. it sorts itself outself out timing wise, you cant adjust it by twisting the dizzy like you do on other cars

If the bar was not their then surely the car would not run as this drives the rotor. Am I wrong??????????????
Has the oil pressure switch been checked at all.

The cam belt drives a shaft which drives the dizzi.
The dizzi has a hexagonal bar which slots in the bottom and drives the oil pump.
If this bar is missing, the engine WILL run and you will have NO oil pressure.
Also, if the engine was rebuilt and the oil pump was NOT pre-primed then it
will not pump oil either .

RST_lee,
The pump is driven DIRECTLY of the shaft that is common to the dizzi.
A hexagonal bar about 3 inches long is used to transmit rotation from the bottom
of the dizzi shaft to the oil pump that sits below it in the sump.
The dizzi shaft is driven half way up by a worm gear from the auxiliary shaft
that is in turn driven off the cam belt.
So is short, the cambelt drivens the aux shaft which drives the dizzi shaft which
drives the hexagonal bar which drives the oil pump.
If the hexagonal drive bar is removed, the dizzi still turns but the oil pump is
not driven so no oil pressure but a running engine.
This ONLY applies to cossies or ford "pinto" engines !!!!
Hope that makes sense.

holed or incorrectly fitted oil pick up pipe, oil pump relief failure...fooked mains or big ends, cracked oil gallery in the block
did he build the engine or did he buy it second hand and not see it run????

pugo, He bought the engine blind (didn't see it working as far as i'm aware) but did mention that for some reason the cams were in back to front But it did have a newly rebuilt short engine.
Any how, it starts on the key now and ticks over just fine - just the oil problem.

is the oil light on??????
tell him to screw an o/pressure gauge straight in the side of the block where the sender goes and have a look as it may just be a bit dry still on the top end or it may have a head gasket gone and not getting any oil to the top
if the light goes out and the top end is tappety, it would make me wonder why the cams had been removed!!!!!!!!

Testing the future
just open the oil cap when it's running. if you have oil up there and spraying about, you must be pumping oil up there. if not, stop it immediately and fix the problem. everything will be quickly fucked by running without oil.
listen to SECS, his advice is spot on. remove the dizzy and look for the hex bar. if it's in there, connect it up to a cordless drill by an extension shaft and spin it up. you should get oil pressure then (which can be checked by removing the turbo oil feed hose). if the bar is in there, but still no oil flow, it can be, as SECS says, that the oil pump was not primed before fitting and may have an air lock so doesn't suck oil up. don't know what you can do about that, short of removing the sump and priming the pump.
