Default How to check for a stolen car trailer?

I'm currently looking to buy a car transporter trailer, but i'm concerned on how to check a trailer over to make sure it is legit. I know to look for some sort of serial number, but how can i check the number?? Obviously, there is the HPi check for cars etc, but what about trailers??

Anyone's previous experiences or general info is appreciated

Cheers, Ed.

If its a brand name trailer I.E. Brian James or ifor Williams it should have a serial number on a plate which you could call the maker and check the history.

I reckon it will be a Brian James trailer but still not sure yet. What the best way of checking ID on a non branded trailer?

you could check with the local plod if they have the serial number (assuming there is one) on record as being stolen..

If there's no serial number but you know the make, someone will probably be able to tell you where the serial number should be on that particular make and then you can see if it's been removed and therefore possibly stolen..

Do trailer companies keep track of how many times a trailer is sold? I'd imagine they would know the original owner and that would be it. If he was buying from the first owner they would probably have the paperwork for it.

Your best bet is check for serial numbers, then check with the police. If there's no ID on it then that's the first clue that it could be stolen.

And take down any details you can from the seller. ie vehicle's they used, name/address where possible etc.

Even a sneaky in-car camera to capture images. Yes it may sound overboard, but cant be too careful these days.

You could call the police if you do get a serial number or something....but unless the trailer has been detected doing 31mph in a 30 zone, doubtful they'll give a shit or bother checking fully.

The equipment register 01225 464599 - they will take chassis plate number and check it you will have to pay like a Hpi check and they will tell you if they have any interest in it.

But if you buy it and then check it and it turns out to be stolen they will arrange the items collection by the police from your possession. You can't give it back and get your money back and they collect from them as you are handling stolen goods.
