Default Audi TT's gone silly cheap???

Was just browsing on gumtree for a 2.0l abf vw motor as found in the mk3 golf gti mk3 when it kept bringing up tt's so I thought I'd take a quick browse and their bloody pence now, seen a load around the £2K mark with £3K getting you a 225 really nice example.

The motor's pretty proven to be fair and they don't rust a lot, I've repaired a few and their actually easy to work on and VERY well put together, can't really see the catch?

Perhaps just time of the year and market forces maybe?

quick cars the 225, wouldnt have a 180 though

1.8t`s can be hard work and TT`s are a bitch to work on!
drivetrain bits can be dear too, i.e good wishbones etc

im only 5ft5 and find it far too cramped inside for my liking

Great value for money, prefer the newer shape ones and even those are under 10k now. Amazing how cheap cars are becoming.....

I'm 6ft 3 and I can drive a convertible if I wanted but the hard top I can't see out the sides even with the seat dropped right down.

Getting on a bit now, guess they are not the cheapest to run and not overly practical so less demand for them.

I nearly bought one years back but felt a bit like I was sitting on the floor with the high door cards and felt a bit heavy and clonky, may have been a more example i looked at.

I don't think they look bad if they are the right spec/colour/wheels.

yeah fair enough point but I still see them as good VFM.

Think S3's are pulling a bit more than that but a good 1.8t quattro is very cheap as well.

Strange how the A3's are cheaper than the golf turbo's (3dr)?

Basically the same motor.

Fucking heaps of shit.

Bought one for the other half about 2 years ago. Paid 4k. Full history great condition could not fault it.

7 days later i had replaced the alternator, lambda, maf and a few bushes.

Drove good for about 2 more weeks then it decided it wanted to steer its self by pulling violently to the left. not fun at 70mph on the motorway. It didn't do this all the time either just when it felt like it.

About a month later it went to webuyanycar.com

Didn't handle too well and felt very slow.

I took it to work one day and a work mate left it for dead in a 59plate focus ST3.

Fair to say we dropped on a lemon but i didn't like before and i hate the things now.

If you bought one for 4k 2 years ago, for sure you were never gonna get a good one.
A good one now can still fetch decent money, its only when you scan these cars on Vagcom and find no errors you can say you have a decent one.

Common faults on the Mk1's are DIS,Alternators, door microswitches, lower rear arm bushes, Arb+Bushes and leaking conecting hoses on the top of the engine to do with the plumbing for recirc valve and boost control.

A 150bhp car is good for 200bhp+ 2 very well known Audi TT tuners have almost garaunteed 205/210 from one of there with a decent remap
A 180 bhp could get you up to 212/220 bhp with remap and few other tweeks.
A 225bhp car with remap and a few more tweeks will see 260bhp ish, again with a few other bits and bobs.
A 3.2l v6 with 250bhp as standard are nice, but not so tuneable.

Stage 1 re-map (custom code) will set you back around the £250 mark inc a full diagnostic check before and after, live mapping a little more.

If you change the ARB for 4motion ones or r32 items the cars are like gocarts, making sure you have the 4wheel alighnment checked every now and then will make sure the car doesnt try and steer its self violently/randomly

Ok these will never keep up with a cossy or an st-3 (221bhp) but they are good, solid built cars.

My TT feels tighter than any Ford ive driven of late including an ST-2 and mines an 04 plate.

If you buy cheap then expect a money pit, there are lots of good ones about if you look.

I have an S3 Mark 1 pre face lift, have owned many Rs fords over the years in fact the Audi is the first non ford for me, after my mk1 focus Rs the Audi feels more refined and easier to live with day to day. Although there is nothing like a focus Rs mk1 to put a smile on your face. My S3 how ever is a 53k example and is immaculate, and would sit easily at a show. But to have an immaculatel non money pit I parted with 6k, but you get what you pay for, 1 previous owner lowest mielage I have seen on one ever, and no reliability issues at all. Seen them for sale for 2 to 3k, worn out interiors, sloppy suspension, over 100.000 miles, in need of work to make them the car they should be. In my opinion save your money and buy a younger less spec car otherwise for 3k think you would be disappointed with a worn out TT/S3. Unless they have thousands of pounds of receipts with the following changed, Maf, TURBO, HALDEX OIL CHANGES STAMPPED, WISHBONES,ARB ETC,.i would not bother. I am enjoying mine at the moment as its as good as they get, but for some reason I am looking at Focus ST2 and Focus Rs mk1's every evening! Having owned both I know the smile factor I'm missing!

My six eggs worth

Don't like them. The very latest ones look nice, but don't like the whole image thing surrounding them.

quite like the look of the 3.2 a3's atm, saw a tidy looking on on a 04 plate with the dsg/auto box with under 100k mils and fsh sell on ebay with no reserve for 3.5k. I paid double that for my mk4 r32 last year for what is essentially the same car!
