Default I need a laptop, but which one!??!!!

I need to get a laptop in the next couple of weeks and not really sure what one to buy... I dont need a stupidly high spec one to play games etc, but it must be relatively quick so i can use my signwriting software, PaintShop, Corel etc. Ive heard bad things about these Centrino and Celeron processors so would rather stick to Intel Processors. Hard disk must be 40gb minimum!

Any help peeps? Ive looked on Dell's site but theres so many of the fookers i got lost!!

Would also rather buy brand new so i get the warranty (and my VAT back!!!!)

the centrino and celeron are types of Intel processors. You should be looking at p4's. I would recommend toshiba's and samsungs. The Samsung V25 is pretty good. I deal with about 30 of them at work.

p4 is old hat

centrino is the latest intel cpu

it may have a slower clock speed but clock speed means shit nowadays.

Id recomend a HP machine as there very easy to get on with.

In my opinion of takign laptops apart and replacing bits etc Toshibas are a nightmare

ive found the Dell machines very good also

if youve got the cash a sony would be my choice BUT if they go wrong they can be a nightmare

A good one to look at is a HP NC 6000

centrino isn't a CPU at all.

the CPU is called a Pentium m. The clock speeds ARE slower but the way the chip is built means that ti runs at the equivalent speed of a P4 with a higher clock speed.

Centrino is the name used when a machine has a Pentium m processor, an INtel wireless card, AND the Intel 855 chipset to support the other 2 components.

Just cos a laptop isn't centrino doesn't make it no good necessarily... it could have the 855 chipset, and the pentium m processor, but just a different manufacturer's wireless card built in, and be fine.

celerons are the ones to avoid, as is the mobile p4.

if you don't need anything top spec I'd go for a Dell latitude to suit your budget. avoid the inspiron models as they're a bit crap, and Toshiba and compaq are both comparitively overpriced imo.

oh - and i'd avoid Sony Vaio like the plague as well.. they all look very bling and have some cool stuff, but as Craig said above, when they go wrong generally tend to be a total nightmare to work on in my experience.

HTH

edited to say that if you're already looking at Dells.. the D505 or D610 is probably what you're after.
get the best you can but be warned.. once you get stuck into the upgrades, what started out as a very cheap laptop rapidly increases in price where Dell are concerned!
