Default Dashcams

Are they available over here like they use in other countries?

Im sick to death of women/elderly drivers. Im currently going through a claim which has been going on nearly a year now, where some old woman smashed into me and then denied fault. Suffering with the injuries still and out of pocket only the next day did a woman decide she wanted my lane on a dual carriageway and took the wing mirror off my courtesy car.

Had a few other close ones with women/elderly drivers.. must be what you get for living in a quiet village. However today i was on a two lane dual carriageway in the right hand lane approaching a roundabout (which gave me the option of either going straight over onto the next stretch of dual carriageway, or i could have turned right onto the roundabout into a retail park).

In the left hand lane was a woman of around 40 years of age, no brake lights apart from one in the rear window ( i spotted her just on the approach to the roundabout) her options where to go straight over onto the next stretch of dual carriageway or turn left at the roundabout into the supermarket. What did she do? she completely cut me up on the roundabout and turned right across my path nearly took the front end off my car and proceeded to go around the roundabout nearly taking the front off another car entering the roundabout from the opposite direction and then drove into the retail park. Guy behind me nearly rear ended me and the horror on his face was priceless at what she just did, i came to a stop on the roundabout in disbelief and the looks i got from the people who were driving behind showed they felt the same disbelief in what had just happened. Wanted to go after her but id come off the roundabout before i realised what had just happened. Couldn't believe it.

Times like this you always avoid the accident, but then afterwards you wish you had just smashed into whoever it was to teach them a lesson. I mainly drive £1500 - £2000k cars that im not all fussed about, now having a dashcam would prove her at fault (as woman and the elderly always deny liability when usually it is them in the wrong) id get paid out on my car plus be able to buy it back put a new bumper on it and hey ho free car which i can always sell on at a later date at the expense of some bitches stupidity. I wouldn't go chasing injury solicitors because im not that type of guy, i just feel some people need to be taught a lesson on the roads, some people are so away with the fairies high up in the clouds its unreal. I know it puts everyones insurance up each time someone claims but just because one of us doesn't claim isn't going to make it any cheaper for us.

Are dashcams easy to fit? Is there any sort of law or anything regarding them, would i need to inform my insurance. I don't want one that records sound just video. Curious how they work. Cheers

Its all well and good having them for evidence of other peoples idiocy, but if you have it on recording all of the time (and you'd want it running all of the time automatically 'just in case') what happens if you make an error yourself? Especially if you're the sort of driver who likes a good hoon every now and then - and lets be honest, most of us here would probably be guilt of that...

Capturing someone elses mistakes is all well and good but I wouldnt want anything to provide any evidence for the prosecution should I make my own error of judgement!

To be honest with the way people are making fraudulent claims lately Ive considered fitting one into my car. If you feel the need to drive like a loon you can always remove the memory card prior to your spirited drive.
No law says you have to have it on. The road hawk also records sound as well,
We have been told that if some one runs up to our trucks to give abuse we should hit the Record and store button so the abuse is recorded.

Another guy knocking older drivers when its the youngsters that cause all the problems. Im 67 & still perfectly capable without being told by people like you i should not be on the road.
Perhaps i should fit one to catch the young idiots i see on the road everyday. Get your facts right before you start on the older driver they are by far the safest on the road.

This one saved the drivers licence as the car driver drove off,
It proved there was another vehicle involved and it wasn't the driver nodding off

Right, so you're having a pop at the OP because he says it's all the older drivers, then you say it's all the younger drivers?

That makes you as bad as you're accusing the OP of being, and thus makes your point completely invalid.

That's a nasty accident there !!

I have a cheapy £40 camera in my van. It is just a camera though. 32gb card records 9 hours.

Although I should really get a HDD just to store all of that though. Would need 1TB for about a months worth of work though.

You can buy cheap GPS based units for under £100 now, although the Roadhawk would be the mainstream version.

If you drive for a living, really you should have some sort of camera in the car. It will be the only way to have a factual record of any accidents. As other drivers and witnesses cant really be relied on, and the police certainly cant be trusted either

That merc crash was a deliberate (cash for smash) or whatever they call it!

Madrod you may be the safest drivers experience wise but by no means the most alert, the amount of elderly and female drivers that seem to drive how they see fit and expect every other driver to adapt to their driving standards is unreal * im just going to pull out of this junction and tootle up the road at 20mph because i can and i feel like it * causing the driver already in use of the joining road whos doing 30 - 40 to slam on the anchors.. etc

There is an app for iPhone, it was on 5th Gear recently. Mount your iPhone facing out and it records a loop and using the phones accelerometer in an impact it will save what it records. Couple of quid I think.

But dare you risk touching the phone at any point whilst in the car, or you will have the entire police force ready to attack you for committing such a heinous crime !

You press the record button before you move the car and job jobbed. The app does the rest.

Since the phone is held in a holder its hands free and you are allowed to touch the buttons to make or receive calls

I used to sell these to the local taxi drivers

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Novus-Blac...ht_3314wt_1398

I dont think theyre particularly cheap but they were very popular and seem very good quality despite being fairly discreet when mounted.

Really interested in one of these after my recent road rage (directed at me)

Someone took offence to me over taking him and followed me for 4 miles trying to get me to stop.

I had no mobile with me, so I headed towards Police station after he realised this, he made a cock and bull story about me, saying I was driving erratically and he had witnessed me drinking a can of lager

Police actually came to my house to arrest me, breathalised me then said it was my word against his.... THE BASTARD!!

Wish I had a camera that day

Plenty of choice on the market.

However if you drive for a living youd be better off with the 3 or 4 camera systems especially if its a big vehicle as some cunt will claim you scrapped them etc and a forward facing only camera may not show enough of the scene to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. all round cameras will show almost everything.

For individuals just commuting etc a single camera will be enough when you consider the lower mileage you do compared to commercial and professional drivers.

simple you take out the camera or the sd card if you crash after trying to drift round a roundabout

you have to be careful with the cheap chinese crap as its hit and miss.

even things in the same apparent casing and box arent necessarily the same item electronically.

You need to find a good manufacturer/supplier and make sure youre getting the same model/version.

Often if you dont want the hassle, just spend £60-80 for a branded one with garuntee etc.

So people from 17+ are all competent drivers without needing assessments ?

Not at all, all they have achieved is the minimum to pass a test.

What I am saying is that many old people should not be on the road. The amount I times I've seen drivers and I thought they were pissed but they were not. They were old.

Medicals are required f or hgv's and it should be for cars as well. And assessments. The elderly are dangerous on the road.

And likewise for people 17+

I'd say there are far more people in the 17-30 bracket...or indeed any sub 65 bracket you could ever think of that shouldnt be allowed on the road regardless of their medical or physical condition.

So what does a medical prove ? Sweet FA

And as for an HGV medical...it really cant be too difficult given the state a of of HGV drivers are in.

And if totally dangerous and incompetent drivers can acquire a license via a test, really, what difference will any medical make ! They could be the healthiest and fittest person in the world and still be a total fucktard behind a wheel.

Lets just ban the fucktards.

You are singling out a section of the community because of age. Not ability. That will do nothing for road safety. It's almost as daft as speed cameras.

Ability to drive is partly physical, but mostly mental. And there are lots of bloody mental people out there of all ages.

As a few examples. NONE of these people should ever be allowed to hold a license, regardless of how physically able they are.

That's ace that quoted video! Proper knob.

Some people are just not suited to drive at all.

Ill find out how good I am Monday on my advanced driving (blue lights) course next week. (Or how bad I am).

We pay £165 for the RoadHawk, may be something to do with work.
The 1 you linked was £245 on their website although I have just seen £189
